Herhaling: categorieën in tweetallen

  2. Uw kind zegt de regel (zoals: ‘Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g.’).
    VraagWelk woord past erbij?
  3. Jullie schrijven allebei een woord op en kijken elkaars woord na. Wissel dan om: uw kind zegt de categorie en u noemt de regel.
VraagHoe weet je dat het woord klopt?
  4. Bij het dictee zonder categoriekaart: denk eerst aan de categorie en de regel, schrijf dan op, zonder categorienummer.
    VraagWelke categorie zit erin?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

Revision: categories in pairs

Year group 6Spelling · Block 8, week 4 · lesson 210 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: practising the rules together

Today your child practised the categories in pairs: one says the category, the other the rule; then they both think of a word. Your child did the dictation without the category card. In the workbook your child also wrote commands and plurals.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. You say the name of a category, for example ‘tremawoord’ (trema word) or ‘garagewoord’ (garage word).
AskWhat is the rule that goes with it?
  2. Your child says the rule (for example: ‘Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g. (Garage word. I hear /zj/, but I write g.)’).
    AskWhich word fits?
  3. You both write a word down and check each other’s word. Then swap: your child says the category and you say the rule.
AskHow do you know the word is right?
  4. In the dictation without the categoriekaart (category card): first think of the category and the rule, then write it down, without a category number.
    AskWhich category is in it?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Play the pairs game: you say a category (taxiwoord · theewoord · caféwoord), your child says the rule and writes a word down. Then swap.Ask: how do you know the word belongs to that category?
  2. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: het leuninkje · het complex · de yoga.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?
  3. Read each question aloud; your child turns it into a command, with an exclamation mark: ‘Pak je je jas?’ · ‘Spoel je het bord af?’.Ask: what is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)? Is a t added?
  4. Plurals: you say the singular (de tak · het ei · de reiziger); your child says and writes the plural.Ask: what does the plural sound like?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Let your child say the rule first and only then write: the rule has to be in their head.
  • Your child writes a command with the ‘I’ form: no t is added.
Answers for the parent: 1: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. · Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. · Caféwoord. Met een streepje op de e. · own words · 2: het leuninkje: Verkleinwoord met -nkje. Plankwoord. Daar mag niets tussen. Dan je erachter. · het complex: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. · de yoga: Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf Griekse y. · 3: Pak je jas! · Spoel het bord af! (imperative: the ik-vorm, no t is added) · 4: de takken · de eieren · de reizigers
