Ik schrijf i.”)?

The word from the station list

Year group 6Spelling · Block 8, week 3 · lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can write the word from the station list correctly."

How you coach: talking the station list through, as at school

Today your child learned a new category: the woord van het station-rijtje (word from the station list). Your child hears /tsjon/ or /sjon/, but writes tion. The rule: Woord van het station-rijtje. (Word from the station list.) Your child learns this list of ten fixed words by heart. Ask the teacher for the printed sheet with the list to follow along.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Do you hear /sjon/ or /tsjon/ in the word? Then it may be a word from the station-rijtje (station list).
AskWhich sound do you hear? Is the word on the list?
  2. Say the rule: Woord van het station-rijtje.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. Talk the word through from left to right, using letter sounds (not letter names). Stop before the ti, say the rule and then carry on writing.
AskWhat do you say just before you write ti?
  4. Another category in the word, such as a kilowoord (kilo word)? Say that rule too: “Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i.”
AskWhich other categories are in the word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Your child says the station list by heart, without looking. Count along: ten words? Have the teacher’s sheet? Follow along.Ask: which word are you unsure of? What do you hear, what do you write?
  2. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: de yoga · het mysterie · het genie.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?
  3. Verbs: you say wij liepen · zij beten · hij zit; your child says the tense and writes down the other tense.Ask: which tense is it in? What is the rule?
  4. Read aloud: ‘Ik heb de nieuwe fiets gepoetst, want hij was vies.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: hww (auxiliary verb), lw (article), bnw (adjective), znw (noun), vdw (past participle), vw (conjunction), ww (verb). (Skip Ik and hij.)Ask: which word is the conjunction?

How did it go?
