The imperative without the category card
Learning goal: "I can write the imperative correctly."
How you coach: the dictation without the category card
Today your child practised the gebiedende wijs (imperative) again with new commands. Your child did the dictation without the category card and with the Staal book closed: the rules have to be in their head. In a command your child writes the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form); no t is added.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word or the sentence and say it back.AskWhat did you hear? Say it again.
- Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no categoriekaart (category card) and the staalboek (Staal book) is closed.AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
- Is there a command? Say: “… is een persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs.” (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, when jij or je comes after it, and in the imperative.)AskIs it a command? Which form do you write?
- Write it down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: het buiginkje · de methode · de paté.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?1: het buiginkje: Verkleinwoord met -nkje. Plankwoord. Daar mag niets tussen. Dan je erachter. · de methode: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. · de paté: Caféwoord. Met een streepje op de e.
- Read the sentence aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down in one go: ‘Luister goed naar het verhaal!’Ask: which word is the persoonsvorm (finite verb)? Is there a subject?2: Luister goed naar het verhaal! (Luister is the imperative: the ik-vorm, no t is added; there is no subject)
- Verbs: you say the whole verb (kijken · plakken · bakken); your child writes the command with an exclamation mark.Ask: what is the ‘I’ form? Is a t added?3: Kijk! · Plak! · Bak!
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Without the category card: let your child first say the rule in their head, and only then write. Do not say which category it is.
- When checking, your child says the rules out loud: that is how the children do it in class, with a checking pencil.
