  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
Ik schrijf i.)? Zeg ook die regel.
VraagWelke categorieën zitten er verder in het woord?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Lees elk woord één keer voor; uw kind zegt het na en schrijft het op: Brazilië · Indonesië · de knieën.Vraag: waar wacht je even? Op welke letter komen de puntjes?

· 2: jij zit – jij zat · jij zingt – jij zong · jij slaapt – jij sliep · 3: persoonsvorm zingt (tijdproef: Zong jouw zus …?); onderwerp jouw zus (Wie zingt?); werkwoordelijk gezegde zingt · 4: eigen woorden, bijvoorbeeld Australië of Azië

The trema word: dots on the letter

Year group 6Spelling · Block 7, week 3 · lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can write the trema word correctly."

How you coach: talking the trema word through, as at school

Today your child learned a new category: the tremawoord (word with a trema), as in ‘wij skiën’ (we ski). A trema is two dots on a letter. The rule: Tremawoord. Puntjes op de … (Trema word. Dots on the …) The trema shows that each letter is pronounced separately. Your child already knows it from reading.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Is each letter pronounced separately, like the i and the e in skiën? Then it may be a trema word.
AskWhich letters do you say separately?
  2. Say the word and talk it through from left to right, using letter sounds. Stop before the trema, say the rule with the letter (for example: Tremawoord. Puntjes op de e. (Trema word. Dots on the e.)) and then carry on writing.
AskWhat do you say just before you write the dots?
  3. Is there another category in the word, such as the kilowoord (kilo word: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. (Kilo word. I write i.))? Say that rule too.
AskWhich other categories are in the word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: Brazilië · Indonesië · de knieën.Ask: where do you stop for a moment? Which letter gets the dots?
  2. Verbs: you say the verb (zitten · zingen · slapen); your child writes jij … in the present tense and jij … in the past tense.Ask: which verb rule goes with jij?
  3. Read aloud: ‘Zingt jouw zus in een band?’ Your child finds the persoonsvorm (pv, finite verb), the onderwerp (ond, subject) and the werkwoordelijk gezegde (wwg, all the verbs in the sentence).Say the sentence in the past tense: which word changes?
  4. From daily life: in an atlas or on a map, find two countries or continents with dots on a letter. Write them down and say the rule.Ask: which letter gets the dots?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • First say the rule, and only then write the dots: the teacher does it the same way. Say sounds, not letter names.
  • Common mistake: leaving out the dots or putting them on the wrong letter. Let your child say the rule aloud.
