Rounding off the diminutive

Year group 6Spelling ยท Block 7, week 2 ยท lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can write the diminutive with -aatje, -ootje and -uutje correctly."

How you coach: the rule without the category card

Your child rounded off the verkleinwoord (diminutive) with -aatje, -ootje or -uutje, without the category card. The rule: Verkleinwoord met -aatje, -ootje of -uutje. (Diminutive with -aatje, -ootje or -uutje.) Your child also thought of routewoorden (route words: Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou. (Route word. I write ou, with an o.)) and named the tense of a sentence.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. Look at the category inside the word and start at the front.
AskWhich category is in the word? What is the rule?
  3. Stop before aatje, ootje or uutje, say the rule and then carry on writing.
AskWhat do you say just before you write the ending?
  4. A verb in a sentence? Say which verb it is and which tense the sentence is in: present, past or perfect tense.
AskWhich verb is it? Which tense is the sentence in?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once, without the book: het autootje ยท het kanootje ยท het opaatje.Ask: which category is in the word? What comes next?
  2. Read aloud; your child names the verb and the tense: โ€˜Mijn zus bakte een cake.โ€™ ยท โ€˜Wij wandelen door het bos.โ€™ ยท โ€˜Zij heeft een pakje gestuurd.โ€™Ask: which verb? Is it now, in the past, or completed?
  3. Read aloud: โ€˜Mijn broer plakt de zegels op de kaart.โ€™ Your child finds the persoonsvorm (finite verb) and the onderwerp (subject).Say the sentence in the past tense: which word changes?
  4. From daily life: think of three route words together and say the rule for each one.Ask: do you hear oe, but write ou?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Check the work carefully together: careful checking is worth just as much as a good dictation.
  • Do you see a diminutive ending in -aatje, -ootje or -uutje at home? Say the rule aloud: that way it becomes a habit.
Answers for the parent: 1: -ootje, -ootje, -aatje: Verkleinwoord met -aatje, -ootje of -uutje. Start at the front; then aatje or ootje ยท 2: bakte: past tense ยท wandelen: present tense ยท heeft gestuurd: perfect tense ยท 3: persoonsvorm plakt (tijdproef: Mijn broer plakte โ€ฆ); onderwerp mijn broer (Wie plakt?) ยท 4: own words, for example de douche or de route
