· 3: persoonsvorm verft (tijdproef: Mijn tante verfde …); werkwoordelijk gezegde verft; onderwerp mijn tante · 4: eigen woorden

The diminutive with -aatje, -ootje and -uutje

Year group 6Spelling · Block 7, week 2 · lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can write the diminutive with -aatje, -ootje and -uutje correctly."

How you coach: talking the diminutive through, as at school

Today your child learned a new category: the verkleinwoord (diminutive: the word for a small version of something) with -aatje, -ootje or -uutje, such as ‘het lamaatje’ (the little llama). The rule: Verkleinwoord met -aatje, -ootje of -uutje. (Diminutive with -aatje, -ootje or -uutje.) With a diminutive ending in -aatje, -ootje or -uutje you cannot go back to the grondwoord (root word); you look at the category inside the word. You start at the front. ‘Dan aatje, ootje of uutje.’ (Then aatje, ootje or uutje.)

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Is it a small thing, and do you hear aatje, ootje or uutje at the end? Then it may be a diminutive. Say the rule: Verkleinwoord met -aatje, -ootje of -uutje.
AskIs it a diminutive? What is the rule?
  2. You cannot go back to the root word. Look at the category inside the word and start at the front; talk it through using letter sounds.
AskWhich category is in the word? What do you say with it?
  3. Stop before aatje, ootje or uutje, say ‘Dan aatje’ (then aatje; or ootje, uutje) and then carry on writing.
AskWhat do you say just before you write the ending?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: het omaatje · het autootje · het caviaatje.Ask: which sound do you hear before the ending? Say the rule.
  2. Verbs: you say the verb (branden · landen); your child writes ik … · jij … · … jij?Ask: what is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)? Where does a t go?
  3. Read aloud: ‘Mijn tante verft de deur van de schuur.’ Your child finds the persoonsvorm (pv, finite verb), the werkwoordelijk gezegde (wwg, all the verbs) and the onderwerp (ond, subject).Say the sentence in the past tense: which word changes? Ask for the subject: who or what + the finite verb?
  4. From daily life: find two small things at home whose name ends in -aatje, -ootje or -uutje. Write them down and say the rule.Ask: what do you say before the ending?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • With these diminutives you do not look at the root word, but at the category inside the word. Always start at the front.
  • With a long vowel at the end your child writes the full aa, oo or uu, so that the word can be read properly.
Answers for the parent: 1: omaatje: -aatje · autootje: -ootje · caviaatje: -aatje; each time: Verkleinwoord met -aatje, -ootje of -uutje. · 2: ik brand – jij brandt – brand jij? · ik land – jij landt – land jij? · 3: pv verft (tijdproef: Mijn tante verfde …); wwg verft; ond mijn tante · 4: own words
