· Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · het cadeau: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. · Cadeauwoord. Ik schrijf e a u.
Revision: category and rule
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."
How you coach: category and rule with every word
Today the teacher revised the categories that are not automatic yet. With every word your child said the category and the rule, wrote a dictation with a sentence and found the word classes in that sentence.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Put your finger on the category and think of the rule. Say the category and the rule using letter sounds.AskWhich category is in it? What is the rule?
- Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
- A verb? First: is it the persoonsvorm (finite verb)? Then the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik and when jij or je comes after it.)AskIs it the finite verb? What is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: de saté · de douche · het cadeau.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?1: de saté: Caféwoord. Met een streepje op de e. · de douche: Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou. · Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · het cadeau: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. · Cadeauwoord. Ik schrijf e a u.
- Verb rows: you say the verb (bouwen · kopen · geven); your child writes ik … · hij … · … jij?Ask: what is the ‘I’ form? Where does a t go?2: ik bouw · hij bouwt · bouw jij? / ik koop · hij koopt · koop jij? / ik geef · hij geeft · geef jij?
- Read aloud: ‘De jongen draagt een zware tas naar school.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw (article), znw (noun), ww (verb), bnw (adjective) or vz (preposition).Ask: which word says something about the bag?3: De (lw) jongen (znw) draagt (ww) een (lw) zware (bnw) tas (znw) naar (vz) school (znw)
- Choose a category that is still difficult, say the rule and think of three words.Ask: how do you know it is right?4: own words.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Use the same words and rules as at school: other exercises, also from the internet, can be confusing.
- A word really not working? Show it once; your child says it back, then writes it alone.
