- Laat uw kind vertellen.
Rounding off the apostrophe-s: more than one, or ownership
Learning goal: "I can write the apostrophe-s plural with y or i and the apostrophe-s for ownership correctly."
How you coach: which of the two rules?
Your child rounded off the two kinds of apostrof-s (apostrophe + s): for more than one (Apostrof-s-meervoud. Bij meervoud en lange klank, y of i aan het eind: apostrof-s, behalve bij ee. (Apostrophe-s plural. In the plural, with a long vowel, a y or an i at the end: apostrophe + s, except with ee.)) and for ownership (Apostrof-s bij bezit. Bij bezit en lange klank, y of i aan het eind: apostrof-s. (Apostrophe-s for ownership. For ownership, with a long vowel, a y or an i at the end: apostrophe + s.)). Your child did the dictation without the categoriekaart (category card).
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Ask: is it about more than one, or about who something belongs to? Then say the rule.AskMore than one, or who does it belong to? What is the rule?
- Talk the word through from left to right. Stop before the ’s, say the rule and then carry on writing.AskWhat do you say just before you write the ’s?
- A verb? First: which tense is it in? Then the verb rule. Present tense: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik and when jij or je comes after it.) Perfect tense: Voltooid deelwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Past participle. I think of the category card.)AskWhich tense is the verb in? What is the other tense?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once, without the book: de guppy’s · opa’s hond · de taxi’s.Ask: more than one, or who does it belong to?1: guppy’s, taxi’s: apostrof-s-meervoud · opa’s hond: apostrof-s bij bezit
- Read two sentences aloud; for each your child says: more than one, or ownership? ‘De panda’s eten bamboe.’ · ‘Mama’s taart is lekker.’Ask: which rule goes with it?2: panda’s: more than one · Mama’s taart: ownership
- Verbs: your child names the tense and makes the other one (present or perfect): ‘Hij verhuist naar de stad.’ · ‘Zij heeft de tafel gedekt.’Ask: which tense is it? Which verb rule goes with it?3: ‘Hij verhuist’ (present) → hij is verhuisd · ‘Zij heeft de tafel gedekt’ (perfect) → zij dekt de tafel
- Read aloud: ‘Mijn oom plant elke lente bloemen.’ Your child finds the persoonsvorm (finite verb) and the onderwerp (subject).Ask for the subject: who or what + the finite verb?4: pv plant (tijdproef: Mijn oom plantte …); ond mijn oom
- From daily life: one sentence about something belonging to someone at home, one about more than one thing with ’s. Say the rule.Ask: more than one, or ownership?5: own sentences
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Both rules have an apostrophe + s. The difference is the meaning: more than one, or whose it is.
