โVraagIs dit een opsomming? Waar komt de komma?
- Spreekt iemand een ander aan? Zeg: โVoor of na de naam van iemand die je aanspreekt, gebruik je een komma.โ
ยท
Revising grammar: the comma
Learning goal: "I can correctly use the parts of grammar I still find difficult."
How you coach: the comma and the parts of the sentence
Today your child revised grammar. The comma gives a short pause in the sentence. A comma goes in a list (except before en and of: and, or), before a voegwoord (conjunction, except en and of) and before or after the name of the person being spoken to. Your child also found the parts of the sentence in a sentence.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Read the sentence aloud. With an opsomming (list) say: โBij een opsomming gebruik je een komma, behalve bij en/of.โ (In a list you use a comma, except before en/of: and/or.)AskIs this a list? Where does the comma go?
- Is someone speaking to another person? Say: โVoor of na de naam van iemand die je aanspreekt, gebruik je een komma.โ (Before or after the name of the person you are talking to, you use a comma.)AskWho is being spoken to? Where does the comma go?
- A voegwoord (conjunction) in the sentence? Then a comma goes before it, except with en and of.AskIs there a conjunction in the sentence? Which one?
- Find the parts of the sentence: persoonsvorm (pv, finite verb), werkwoordelijk gezegde (wwg, all the verbs together) and onderwerp (ond, subject). Say the sentence as a question or in another tense.AskWhich word is the finite verb? Who or what + the finite verb?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read aloud; your child writes the sentences with the comma: โIk heb mijn pet handschoenen en warme sokken ingepakt.โ ยท โOma heb je ook honger?โ ยท โBedankt voor de hulp opa.โAsk: where does the comma go? What is the rule?1: Ik heb mijn pet, handschoenen en warme sokken ingepakt. ยท Oma, heb je ook honger? ยท Bedankt voor de hulp, opa.
- Read aloud: โMijn fiets is stuk dus ik ga lopen.โ Your child writes the sentence with the comma and finds the conjunction.Ask: which word joins the two parts of the sentence?2: Mijn fiets is stuk, dus ik ga lopen. Conjunction: dus
- Read aloud: โIn de tuin plukten wij appels peren en pruimen.โ Your child writes the sentence with the comma and finds the finite verb and the subject.Ask: who or what + the finite verb?3: In de tuin plukten wij appels, peren en pruimen. Persoonsvorm plukten; onderwerp wij
- Read aloud: โMijn oom draagt een wollen muts.โ Your child finds the stoffelijk bijvoeglijk naamwoord (material adjective) and the finite verb, and also says the sentence in the past tense.Ask: what material is the hat made of?4: wollen (van wol); persoonsvorm draagt; past tense: Mijn oom droeg een wollen muts
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Common mistake: forgetting a comma, or adding one too many, especially before en or of.
- Ask with every comma: why is it here? Then your child practises the rule instead of guessing.
