VraagWelke categorie zit erin? Wat is de regel?

Revision: categories and verbs

Year group 6Spelling · Block 6, week 4 · lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: category, rule and verb

This is the revision week of block 6. Your child looked back at the categories they still find difficult (at the back of the workbook under ‘Terugkijken spelling’), did verb rows (present and perfect tense) and wrote a dictation with a sentence.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Put your finger on the category and think of the rule. Say the category and the rule using letter sounds.
AskWhich category is in it? What is the rule?
  3. A verb? Say the verb rule. Present tense: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik and when jij or je comes after it.) Perfect tense: Voltooid deelwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Past participle. I think of the category card.)
AskIs it the persoonsvorm (finite verb) or the voltooid deelwoord (past participle)?
  4. Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: de puppy · de bagage · de couscous.Ask: which category? What is the rule?
  2. Verbs: you say the verb (bellen · wonen · fietsen); your child writes ik … and ik heb … (perfect tense).Ask: what is the verb rule?
  3. Read aloud: ‘Papa heeft in de tuin een kleine boom geplant.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: znw, hww (auxiliary verb), vdw (past participle), vz, lw or bnw.Ask: which verbs are in it? Which one is the auxiliary verb?
  4. From daily life: your child names a category they still find difficult, says the rule and thinks of or looks up five words for it.Ask: how do you know it is right?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Let your child choose which category to practise: they often know themselves what is difficult.
  • Finding five words for a category also works in between, for example on the way somewhere: that way your child practises while playing.
Answers for the parent: 1: de puppy: Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf Griekse y. · de bagage: Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g. · de couscous: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. · Routewoord.
