The Greek y word without the category card
Learning goal: "I can write the Greek y word correctly."
How you coach: the dictation without the category card
Today your child practised the Griekse y-woord (Greek y word: Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf Griekse y. (Greek y word. I write a Greek y.)) again with new words. Your child did the dictation without the category card and with the Staal book closed: the rules have to be in their head. In the classroom there is a large sheet on which the children write words themselves.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no categoriekaart (category card) and the staalboek (Staal book) is closed.AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
- More than one category in the word? Say them all, in order from left to right.AskWhich categories are in it?
- Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: de pyjama ยท de teddybeer ยท het symbool.Ask: which category do you recognise? Is it a compound word?1: de pyjama and het symbool: Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf Griekse y. ยท *teddybeer: compound word; for teddy: Griekse y-woord. Ik schrijf Griekse y.
- Read aloud: โDe kleine baby heeft een zacht kussen gekregen.โ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw, bnw, znw, hww (auxiliary verb) or vdw (past participle).Ask: which words are the verb? Which one is the auxiliary verb?2: De (lw) kleine (bnw) baby (znw) heeft (hww) een (lw) zacht (bnw) kussen (znw) gekregen (vdw)
- Word sheet: write โGriekse y-woordenโ on a sheet and let your child add words they come across. Check each word first, e.g. on packaging.Ask: do you hear /ie/, /i/ or /j/, and are you sure it is a y?3 and 4: own words and sentence
- From daily life: your child makes up a Dutch sentence with a Greek y word and writes it down, with a capital letter and a full stop.Ask: which rule goes with the word?3 and 4: own words and sentence
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Without the category card: let your child first say the rule in their head, and only then write. Do not say which category it is.
- Not sure whether it is a y? There is no rule: look the word up together and let your child write it a few times.
