  4. Schrijf het woord op, zonder categorienummer. Een samenstelling krijgt een sterretje ervoor.
VraagIs het een samenstelling? Welke delen?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

Finishing the garage word

Year group 6Spelling ยท Block 6, week 2 ยท lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can write the garage word correctly."

How you coach: category and rule without the category card

Your child finished the garagewoord (garage word: Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g. (Garage word. I hear /zj/, but I write g.)), without the category card. With compound words your child also said the category and the rule for each part, and put verbs into the present and the past tense.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. Stop before the g and say the rule; then carry on writing.
AskWhich category is this? What do you say before you write the g?
  3. A verb in the past tense? Say the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de verleden tijd van een sterk werkwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Finite verb in the past tense of a strong verb. I think of the category card.)
AskWhat is the ik-vorm (the โ€˜Iโ€™ form) in the present tense? And in the past tense?
  4. Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
AskIs it a compound word? Which parts?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: de reportage ยท de slijtage ยท de montage.Ask: which category is this? What is the rule?
  2. Verbs: you say the verb (spreken ยท bieden ยท kiezen); your child writes jij โ€ฆ (present tense) and jij โ€ฆ (past tense).Ask: what is the verb rule?
  3. Read aloud: โ€˜Onze buren zwommen elke dag in het meer.โ€™ Your child finds the persoonsvorm (finite verb) and the onderwerp (subject).Say the sentence in the present tense: which word changes?
  4. From daily life: look together in a leaflet for two words with a /zj/. Write them down and say the rule.Ask: what do you hear at the end? Which letter do you write?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Check the work carefully together: careful checking is worth just as much as a good dictation.
  • A word not right? Let your child write it again a few times and say the rule with it.
Answers for the parent: 1: de reportage, de slijtage and de montage: Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g. ยท 2: jij spreekt โ€“ jij sprak / jij biedt โ€“ jij bood / jij kiest โ€“ jij koos ยท 3: persoonsvorm zwommen (past tense, strong: zwemmen โ€“ zwom); onderwerp onze buren ยท 4: own words; the rule: Garagewoord. Ik hoor /zj/, maar ik schrijf g.
