ยท Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou. (twee keer: cous-cous) ยท de clou: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. ยท Routewoord.
Waar wacht je even?4: eigen woord
Hoe ging het?
Tip van de juf
- Eerst de regel zeggen, dan pas de ou schrijven: zo doet de juf het ook.
- Zeg klanken, geen letternamen: zo verwoorden de kinderen op school.
The route word: ou with an o
Learning goal: "I can write the route word correctly."
How you coach: talking the route word through, as at school
Today your child learned a new category: the routewoord (route word). In a route word the ou sounds like oe (the โooโ in โfoodโ); these are French loanwords, such as tournee. The rule: Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou. (Route word. I write ou, with an o.) There is no rule that tells you whether a word is written with oe or ou: your child learns the words, especially the ones they come across often.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Do you hear /oe/ in a word that comes from French? Then it may be a route word.AskWhich sound do you hear? Does the word come from French?
- Say the rule: Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou.AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
- Talk the word through from left to right, using letter sounds (the sound, not the name of the letter). Stop before the ou and say the rule; then carry on writing.AskWhat do you say just before you write the ou?
- Is there another category in the word, such as a colawoord (cola word: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. (Cola word. I write c.))? Say that rule too.AskWhich other categories are in the word?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: de couscous ยท de clou (the main point).Ask: which category do you hear? What is the rule?1: de couscous: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. ยท Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou. (twice: cous-cous) ยท de clou: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. ยท Routewoord. Ik schrijf otje-ou.
- Verbs: you say the whole verb (beloven ยท verwarmen ยท verkopen); your child writes jij โฆ in the present tense and jij hebt โฆ in the perfect tense.Ask: what is the ik-vorm (the โIโ form)? Which verb rule goes with it?2: jij belooft โ jij hebt beloofd ยท jij verwarmt โ jij hebt verwarmd ยท jij verkoopt โ jij hebt verkocht
- Read aloud: โOpa zet een houten bank in de tuin.โ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw (article), znw (noun), ww (verb), vz (preposition) or sbnw (material adjective).Ask: what material is the bench made of?3: Opa (znw) zet (ww) een (lw) houten (sbnw) bank (znw) in (vz) de (lw) tuin (znw)
- From daily life: on packaging or a sign, find a French word in which you hear oe. Write it down and say the rule.Ask: do you hear oe, and do you write ou? Where do you stop for a moment?4: own word
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- First say the rule, and only then write the ou: the teacher does it the same way.
- Say sounds, not letter names: that is how the children talk words through at school.
