Isch-woord. Ik schrijf isch. · provinciaal: Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. · Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i.
With -en, without the category card
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the sound-group word with a material adjective."
How you coach: the dictation without the category card
Today your child practised the material adjective again (Stoffelijk bijvoeglijk naamwoord, dus met -en. (Material adjective, so with -en.)). Your child did the dictation without the category card and with the Staal book closed. Your child also found the word classes in a sentence and filled in past participles.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no categoriekaart (category card) and the staalboek (Staal book) is closed.AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
- More than one category in the word? Say them all. A compound word: say the category for each part.AskWhich categories are in it?
- Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: tinnen · bronzen · rubberen.Ask: which category is this? What do you say before -en?1: all three Stoffelijk bijvoeglijk naamwoord, dus met -en. (rubberen also: Woord met /urun/. Ik schrijf twee keer e.)
- Read each word aloud once; your child writes it down and says the categories: technisch · provinciaal.Ask: which categories are in it? What is the rule?2: technisch: Woord van het pech-versje. Isch-woord. Ik schrijf isch. · provinciaal: Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. · Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i.
- Read aloud: ‘Opa schenkt thee in een porseleinen kopje.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw, znw, ww, vz or sbnw.Ask: what is the cup made of?3: Opa (znw) schenkt (ww) thee (znw) in (vz) een (lw) porseleinen (sbnw) kopje (znw)
- Voltooid deelwoord (past participle): you say the sentence, your child writes the participle: Ik bewaar de foto, ik heb de foto … · Hij ontdekt een geheim, hij heeft een geheim … · Zij herhaalt de som, zij heeft de som …Ask: make the word longer. Do you hear d or t?4: bewaard · ontdekt · herhaald
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Without the category card: let your child first say the rule in their head, and only then write. Do not say which category it is.
- With an adjective, first ask: what is it made of? Then your child knows whether -en is needed.
