The café word without the category card

Year group 6Spelling · Block 5, week 1 · lesson 210 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can write the café word correctly."

How you coach: the dictation without the category card

Today your child practised the caféwoord (café word: Caféwoord. Met een streepje op de e.) again with new words. Your child did the dictation without the category card and with the Staal book closed: the rules have to be in their head. Your child also recalled words from the gids-rijtje (gids list) by heart. The rule: Woord van het gids-rijtje. Ik schrijf d. (Word from the gids list. I write d.)

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and say it back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Think of the category and the rule in your head. There is no categoriekaart (category card) and the staalboek (Staal book) is closed.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. More than one category in the word? Say them all. A compound word: say the category for each part.
    AskWhich categories are in it?
  4. Write the word down, without a category number. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, without the book: privé · ginds · het fonds.Ask: which category is this? What is the rule?
  2. Gids list by heart: your child names three words from the gids list and says the rule.Ask: what is the rule?
  3. Read aloud: ‘De bakker bezorgt brood in het buurtcafé.’ Your child writes the word class under each word: lw (article), znw (noun), ww (verb) or vz (preposition).Ask: which word is the verb?
  4. From daily life: your child makes up a Dutch sentence with the word privé and writes it down (with a capital letter and a full stop).Ask: which category is privé? What is the rule?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Without the category card: let your child first say the rule in their head, and only then write. Do not say which category it is.
  • Your child practises the gids list by heart: you do not need to know the words. If your child forgets one, let them try another.
Answers for the parent: 1: privé: Caféwoord. Met een streepje op de e. · ginds and fonds: Woord van het gids-rijtje.
