Zo coacht u: het theewoord van school

Uw kind leerde vandaag het theewoord: een woord waarin u een t hoort, maar waarin u t h schrijft, zoals thee en stethoscoop. De regel: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. Er is geen regel waarom: uw kind kent deze woorden al van het lezen en leert nu ook hoe ze geschreven worden. Bij het voordoen op school spreekt de juf de th overdreven uit.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Luister naar het woord en spreek de th overdreven uit.
    VraagWelke klank hoor je aan het begin? Zeg het woord nog eens, overdreven.
  2. Zeg de regel: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h.
    VraagWelke categorie is dit? Wat is de regel?
  3. Wacht bij de th, zeg de regel en schrijf dan pas verder.
    VraagWat doe je bij de th voordat je verder schrijft?
  4. Samenstelling? Zeg per deel: ‘Samenstelling. 1e woord: thee. Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. 2e woord: doek. Hakwoord. Ik schrijf het woord zoals ik het hoor.’
    VraagUit welke twee woorden bestaat het? Welke categorie heeft elk deel?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Lees elk woord één keer voor; uw kind zegt het na en schrijft het op: de theedoek · de stethoscoop · katholiek.Vraag: welke categorie is dit? Wat is de regel?
  2. Lees de zin voor: ‘Het theezakje ligt naast de thermosfles.’ Uw kind schrijft hem op, met hoofdletter en punt.Vraag: welke woorden zijn theewoorden?
  3. Lees voor: zij verzamelt · ik heb verteld. Welke tijd? Verander de tijd (van tegenwoordige naar voltooide tijd, of andersom).Vraag: welk woord is het werkwoord? Wat is de werkwoordregel?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: zoek in huis, bijvoorbeeld op een pak thee of in een boek, een woord met th en schrijf het op.Vraag: welke regel hoort bij dit woord?

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Je hoort alleen een t, maar je schrijft t h. Er is geen regel om het te raden: uw kind leert de woorden kennen, dus oefen ze vaak.
  • In de klas hangt een groot vel waar de kinderen deze week zelf theewoorden op mogen schrijven (de juf controleert het woord eerst). Vindt uw kind in huis een theewoord? Laat het dat vertellen.

How you coach: the school’s tea word

Today your child learned the theewoord (tea word): a word in which you hear a t but write t h, like thee (tea) and stethoscoop. The rule: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. (Tea word. I write t h.) There is no rule for why: your child already knows these words from reading and is now learning how to write them. When showing it at school, the teacher exaggerates the th.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen to the word and exaggerate the th.
    AskWhich sound do you hear at the start? Say the word again, exaggerated.
  2. Say the rule: Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h.
    AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  3. Stop at the th, say the rule, and only then carry on writing.
    AskWhat do you do at the th before you carry on writing?
  4. A samenstelling (compound word)? Say for each part: ‘Samenstelling. 1e woord: thee. Theewoord. Ik schrijf t h. 2e woord: doek. Hakwoord. Ik schrijf het woord zoals ik het hoor.’ (1st word thee: a tea word. 2nd word doek: I write it as I hear it.)
    AskWhich two words is it made of? Which category does each part have?

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: de theedoek · de stethoscoop · katholiek.Ask: which category is this? What is the rule?
  2. Read the sentence aloud: ‘Het theezakje ligt naast de thermosfles.’ Your child writes it down, with a capital letter and a full stop.Ask: which words are tea words?
  3. Read aloud: zij verzamelt · ik heb verteld. Which tense? Change the tense (from present to perfect, or the other way round).Ask: which word is the verb? What is the verb rule?
  4. From daily life: look around the house, for example on a box of tea or in a Dutch book, for a word with th and write it down.Ask: which rule goes with this word?

Tip from the teacher

  • You only hear a t, but you write t h. There is no rule to guess it: your child gets to know the words, so practise them often.
  • In class there is a big sheet on the wall where the children can write their own tea words this week (the teacher checks the word first). Does your child find a tea word at home? Let them tell you about it.
