Persoonsvorm of voltooid deelwoord?
Finite verb: when does a t go at the end?
Learning goal: "I can write the finite verb in the present tense correctly."
How you coach: the school’s werkwoordschema (verb chart)
Today your child learned when a t goes at the end of a verb, also with verbs that start with be-, ge-, ver-, her- or ont-. The school’s werkwoordregel (verb rule): Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat. (Finite verb in the present tense: the ‘I’ form + t, except with ik and when jij or je comes after it.) So: hij beantwoordt (ik-vorm beantwoord + t). But in hij heeft beantwoord, beantwoord is a voltooid deelwoord (past participle): the rule does not apply there.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Is it a persoonsvorm (finite verb)? No (it is a past participle, as in hij heeft beantwoord): think of the category card (voorvoegsel, klankgroepenwoord, langermaakwoord). Yes: carry on with the werkwoordschema.AskIs this a finite verb or a past participle? How can you tell?
- Say the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat.AskWhat is the verb rule? Is it ik, or does jij come after the verb?
- First write the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form), then the ending: ik-vorm beantwoord + t = beantwoordt.AskWhat is the ik-vorm? Does a t go at the end?
- Say it aloud as at school: ‘… is een persoonsvorm. Het is hij, dus ik schrijf de ik-vorm + t.’ (… is a finite verb. It is hij, so I write the ‘I’ form + t.)AskCan you show me how you explain it?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Verb rows: you say the verb (beloven · herhalen · verbinden), your child writes ik … · hij … · … jij?Ask: what is the ik-vorm? Why is there a t, or why not?1: ik beloof · hij belooft · beloof jij? / ik herhaal · hij herhaalt · herhaal jij? / ik verbind · hij verbindt · verbind jij?
- Read aloud: hij verhuist · hij is verhuisd · zij bereidt · zij heeft bereid. Finite verb or past participle?Ask: which rule goes with it?2: finite verb: hij verhuist, zij bereidt; past participle: hij is verhuisd, zij heeft bereid
- Read aloud: ‘Onze buurman herhaalt het verhaal.’ Your child finds the finite verb and the onderwerp (subject).Turn it into a question: which word comes first?3: persoonsvorm herhaalt, onderwerp onze buurman
- From daily life: your child writes three Dutch sentences about what is happening at home right now (for example: De kat slaapt.) and underlines the finite verb.Ask: turn it into a question. Which word comes first?4: own sentences.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Common mistake: forgetting the t with hij or zij, or adding a t to a past participle (hij heeft beantwoord). First ask: is it a finite verb?
- Watch out: jij zendt (jij before the verb, so t), but zend jij? (jij after it, no t). If the ik-vorm already ends in t, it stays that way: ik zet, zij zet.
