The chef word

Year group 6Spelling · Block 3, week 3 · lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can write the chef word correctly."

How you coach: the school’s chef word

Today your child learned the chefwoord (chef word): words with c h that you say as ‘sh’, like chef and lunch. Your child already knows these words from reading and is now learning to write them too. The school’s rule: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. (Chef word. I write c h.)

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Recognise the chefwoord: a word your child already knows from reading, like chef or lunch.
AskIs this a chef word? Which category is it?
  2. Say the rule: ‘Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h.’ The chef word can be at the front (chef) or at the end (lunch).
AskWhat is the rule? Where in the word do you hear it?
  3. Also say the other categories in the word, using letter sounds (the sound, not the name of the letter).
AskWhich other categories are in it?
  4. Write the word down. With the chef word, say the rule: ‘Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h.’
AskWhat do you write for the chef word?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back, writes it down and says the chef word rule: de brochure · de chocoladereep.Ask: which category is in it? Which others?
  2. Read aloud and let your child write it in one go: ‘Neem jij een lunchbox mee?’Ask: which word has c h in it? Which punctuation mark goes at the end?
  3. Verbs in three tenses: you say the verb (drinken · schrijven · helpen), your child writes ik … (now) · ik … (past) · ik heb … (perfect).Ask: which tense is the verb in? How does it sound now?
  4. From daily life: find two words with c h on packaging or in a Dutch book that you say as ‘sh’, like ketchup. Your child says the rule.Ask: do you hear ‘sh’? (In lachen you do not.)

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The chef word can also be at the end (lunch): let your child look at the whole word.
  • In class there is a big sheet where the children write chef words themselves (the teacher checks them first). Your child finds a c h word at home? Let them show the teacher.
Answers for the parent: 1: de brochure: sound groups broo and chuu · Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · de *chocoladereep: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · Colawoord.
