Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. · Braziliaan: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. · virtueel: Klankgroep tuu: lange klank, een stukje van de uu weg. Eel-woord. Ik schrijf ee. · 3: zijn (hww) · gefietst (vdw)

Revision: strong verbs and categories

Year group 6Spelling · Block 2, week 4 · lesson 410 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I still find difficult."

How you coach: strong verbs in the past tense

Today your child revised verbs in the present and the past tense, and the rule for the verleden tijd van een sterk werkwoord (past tense of a strong verb), alongside a few categories. Your child also found the auxiliary verb and the past participle in a sentence.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Say the whole verb. Say ik … in the present tense and ik … in the past tense.
AskWhat is the present tense? And the past tense?
  2. Say the rule for the past tense: Persoonsvorm in de verleden tijd van een sterk werkwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Finite verb in the past tense of a strong verb: I think of the category card.)
AskWhich rule goes with the past tense of this verb?
  3. Put your finger on the category. Think of the rule. Write the word down and write the number of the category above it. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.
AskWhich category is this? What is the rule?
  4. Sentence: find the hulpwerkwoord (hww, auxiliary verb) and the voltooid deelwoord (vdw, past participle).
AskWhich verb helps? Which verb goes with it?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. You say the whole verb; your child says ik … (present tense) and ik … (past tense): stelen · binden · zwijgen.Ask: which rule goes with the past tense?
  2. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down, with the number of the category above it: complex · de Braziliaan · virtueel.Ask: which category or categories are in it? What is the rule?
  3. Read aloud: Wij zijn naar het strand gefietst. Your child finds the auxiliary verb and the past participle.Ask: which verb goes with the auxiliary verb?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The category card hangs in the classroom. You do not need to know the strong verbs by heart: let your child explain how they know the forms.
  • The perfect tense has an auxiliary verb (heeft, is, zijn) and a past participle.
Answers for the parent: 1: ik steel – ik stal · ik bind – ik bond · ik zwijg – ik zweeg (past participle: gestolen, gebonden, gezwegen) · 2: complex: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. Taxiwoord.
