Grammar revision: adjective and parts of the sentence
Learning goal: "I can recognise the parts of grammar I still find difficult."
How you coach: adjective, finite verb and preposition
Your child looked back at the grammar that is still difficult (‘Terugkijken grammatica’ at the back of the workbook). Today your child revised the bijvoeglijk naamwoord (adjective) from a place name, the persoonsvorm (finite verb) with the tense test, the subject and the voorzetsel (preposition).
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Say: Het bijvoeglijk naamwoord zegt iets over het zelfstandig naamwoord. (The adjective says something about the noun.) Does it come from a place name? Then with a capital letter.AskWhich word is the adjective? What does it say something about?
- Finite verb: change the tense (tijdproef, tense test) or make it a question (vraagproef, question test). The word that changes or comes first is the finite verb.AskWhich word changes in another tense?
- Onderwerp (subject): who or what + finite verb? Also find the preposition (vz).AskWho or what …? Which word is the preposition?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read aloud: Wij logeren in een Zeeuwse badplaats. Your child finds the adjective and says what it says something about.Ask: why does the word start with a capital letter?1: Zeeuwse (bnw), zegt iets over badplaats, with a capital letter
- Read aloud: Mijn buurman bakt Hollandse stroopwafels. Your child finds the finite verb with the tense test, and the subject.Say the sentence in another tense: which word changes?2: persoonsvorm bakt (bakte), onderwerp mijn buurman
- Read aloud: Wij gaan met de bus naar het strand. Your child finds the prepositions.Ask: which words say how or where to?3: met · naar
- Ask your child which parts they chose in ‘Terugkijken grammatica’. Practise one of them together with a sentence of your own.Ask: how do you recognise this part in a sentence?4: own answer.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The adjective says something about the noun. An adjective from a country, city or region gets a capital letter.
- For the finite verb it really helps to say the sentence out loud in another tense.
