Ik schrijf i. Of: Taxiwoord.
Revision: the categories that are still difficult
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."
How you coach: category, rule and verb tense
Today your child revised the categories they still find difficult, such as the kilowoord (kilo word) and the taxiwoord (taxi word: a word with an x), and worked out the tense of a sentence: present, past or perfect tense.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Say the word back and name the category and the rule, for example: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. (I write i.) Or: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. (I write x.)AskWhich category is this word? What is the rule?
- Talk the word through step by step, with letter sounds, and also name the other categories in the word.AskWhich other categories are in it?
- Verb in a sentence: look at the persoonsvorm (finite verb) and think ‘nu’ (now) or ‘eerder’ (earlier). That tells you whether it is the present or the past tense. With an auxiliary verb and a past participle it is the perfect tense.AskIs it now or earlier? Is there an auxiliary verb?
- Check and say for every word: what is the category and what is the rule?AskIs your word right? What is the rule?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back, thinks of the category and the rule and writes it down: extra · complex · december.Ask: which category is this? What is the rule?1: extra: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. · complex: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. · december: Centwoord. Ik schrijf c.
- Which tense? Read aloud: De kinderen hebben gelachen. · De bakker bakt brood. · De poes sprong op de bank. Your child names the finite verb and the tense.Think ‘nu’ or ‘eerder’.2: hebben gelachen: perfect tense · bakt: present tense · sprong: past tense
- Together choose one category your child still finds difficult and think of three words for it. Your child says the category and the rule for each word.Ask: how do you check the word?3: own words, with category and rule.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Praise what is already going well and ask: which category would you like to practise more? Your child tells the teacher too.
- Do not only ask for the word, but also for the rule: that is what the teacher wants to hear.
