Ik schrijf i. · T(s)ie-woord. Ik schrijf tie. · het medicijn: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. · Centwoord.

Categories and the perfect tense
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I have learned."
How you coach: category and rule, and the perfect tense
The last week of block 10: your child revised what is not automatic yet, wrote a dictation and used the perfect tense: ‘hij vertelt’ – ‘hij heeft verteld’ (he has told).
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Put your finger on the category and think of the rule. Say the category and the rule using letter sounds.AskWhich category is in it? What is the rule?
- Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
- A verb? First: is it a persoonsvorm (finite verb)? Then the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Present-tense finite verb: ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, with jij/je after it, and in the imperative.)AskIs it a finite verb? What is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)?
- A perfect tense (hij heeft …)? Say the verb rule: Voltooid deelwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart. (Past participle. I think of the category card.)AskWhat is the whole verb? Which verb rule goes with it?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word once; your child repeats it and writes it down: de notitie · het medicijn · de excursie.Ask: which category do you recognise? What is the rule?1: de notitie: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. (Kilo word: I write i.) · T(s)ie-woord. Ik schrijf tie. (T(s)ie word: I write tie.) · het medicijn: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. · Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. (Cent word: the c sounds like s.) · Staat niet op de ei-plaat, dus lange ij. (Not on the ei chart: long ij.) · de excursie: Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. (Taxi word. I write x.) · Colawoord. Ik schrijf c.
- You say the verb and the present tense (bellen: hij belt · bouwen: jij bouwt · plakken: zij plakt · spelen: ik speel); your child writes the perfect tense.Ask: what is the whole verb? Which rule?2: hij heeft gebeld · jij hebt gebouwd · zij heeft geplakt · ik heb gespeeld
- Read aloud: ‘Mijn vader is naar de markt gefietst.’ Your child labels each word (znw, hww, vz, lw, vdw: noun, auxiliary verb, preposition, article, past participle) and names the tense.Ask: which word is the past participle?3: Mijn (no label) vader (znw) is (hww) naar (vz) de (lw) markt (znw) gefietst (vdw) · perfect tense (is gefietst)
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- First the whole verb (wonen), then the perfect tense (hij heeft gewoond), with the school rule. No other tricks.
