Revision: what is still difficult
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I have learned."
How you coach: category and rule with every word
Today the teacher revised what does not come automatically yet. With every word your child said the category and the rule, wrote a dictation with a sentence, found the parts of the sentence in it and thought about what they still want to practise.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Put your finger on the category and think of the rule. Say the category and the rule using letter sounds.AskWhich category is in it? What is the rule?
- Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
- A verb? First: is it a persoonsvorm (finite verb)? Then the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Present-tense finite verb: ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, with jij/je after it, and in the imperative.)AskIs it a finite verb? What is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: het fotootje · het koninkje · een katoenen broek.Ask: what kind of word is it? What is the rule?1: het fotootje: Verkleinwoord met -ootje. (Diminutive with -ootje.) · Dan ootje. (Then ootje.) · het koninkje: Verkleinwoord met -nkje. (Diminutive with -nkje.) · Plankwoord. Daar mag niets tussen. (Plank word. Nothing may come in between.) · Dan je erachter. (Then je after it.) · katoenen: Stoffelijk bijvoeglijk naamwoord, dus met -en. (Material adjective, so with -en.)
- Verb rows: you say the verb (rekenen · tekenen · bouwen); your child writes ik … · hij … · … jij?Ask: what is the ‘I’ form? Where does a t go?2: ik reken · hij rekent · reken jij? / ik teken · hij tekent · teken jij? / ik bouw · hij bouwt · bouw jij?
- Read aloud: ‘De buurvrouw geeft de planten water.’ Your child finds the pv (finite verb), the wwg (all the verbs) and the ond (subject).Put the sentence in a different tense: which word changes?3: pv geeft (past tense: gaf) · wwg geeft · ond de buurvrouw (Wie geeft?)
- Choose a category that is still difficult, say the rule and think of three words.Ask: how do you know it is right?4: own words.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Use the same words and rules as at school: other material can be confusing.
- More practice? Use the practice sheet (button on the digital card).
