· Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. · de chirurg: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. · de cavia: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. · Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i.

Revision: categories and verbs
Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories and verbs I have learned."
How you coach: category and rule with every word
This is the last spelling block of the year: nothing new, your child revises what they know. With every word your child names the category and the rule, e.g. ‘Taxiwoord. Ik schrijf x. (Taxi word. I write x.)’ Verbs were revised too: present tense, past tense and past participle.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Listen to the word and say it back.AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
- Put your finger on the category and think of the rule; say both using letter sounds. At school the categoriekaart (category card) hangs on the board and the staalboek (Staal book) is open.AskWhich category is in it? What is the rule?
- Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word)? Put a star in front of it.AskIs it a compound word?
- A verb? First: is it a persoonsvorm (finite verb)? Then the verb rule: Persoonsvorm in de tegenwoordige tijd: ik-vorm+t, behalve bij ik en als jij of je erachter staat en bij de gebiedende wijs. (Present-tense finite verb: ‘I’ form + t, except with ik, with jij/je after it, and in the imperative.)AskIs it a finite verb? What is the ik-vorm (the ‘I’ form)?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read each word aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down: het circus · de chirurg · de cavia.Ask: which categories do you hear? What is the rule?1: het circus: Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. (Cent word: the c sounds like s.) · Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. (Cola word: the c sounds like k.) · de chirurg: Chefwoord. Ik schrijf c h. · Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. (Kilo word: I write i.) · de cavia: Colawoord. Ik schrijf c. · Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i.
- Read aloud and let your child fill in the verb: ‘Mijn zus … (sturen) een kaart.’ · ‘Vroeger … ik (nemen) altijd de bus.’ · ‘Wij hebben de brief … (lezen).’Ask: which verb rule goes with it?2: stuurt (rule from step 4) · nam (Persoonsvorm in de verleden tijd van een sterk werkwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart.) · gelezen (Voltooid deelwoord. Ik denk aan de categoriekaart.)
- Read aloud: ‘De buurvrouw plant struiken in de tuin.’ Your child finds the persoonsvorm (pv), the werkwoordelijk gezegde (wwg, all the verbs in the sentence) and the onderwerp (ond, subject).Make it a question: which word comes first?3: pv plant (past tense: plantte) · wwg plant · ond de buurvrouw (Wie plant?)
How did it go?
