Grammar revision: word classes and punctuation
Learning goal: "I can correctly use the parts of grammar I still find difficult."
How you coach: word classes, capital letters and punctuation
Your child revised the word classes with their abbreviations (ww, hww, vdw, lw, znw, bnw, vz) and the capital letters and punctuation in a sentence.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Name the word class of the word and write the abbreviation underneath: werkwoord (ww, verb), hulpwerkwoord (hww, auxiliary verb), voltooid deelwoord (vdw, past participle), lidwoord (lw, article), zelfstandig naamwoord (znw, noun), bijvoeglijk naamwoord (bnw, adjective) or voorzetsel (vz, preposition).AskWhich word class is this word? What is the abbreviation?
- Auxiliary verb and past participle belong together. An adjective says something about a noun.AskWhich verb belongs with the auxiliary verb? What does the adjective say something about?
- Capital letter: at the start of the sentence, for names and for place names. At the end of the sentence: a full stop or a question mark.AskWhere is a capital letter? Which punctuation mark goes at the end?

- From daily life: together choose a sentence from a book or from packaging. Your child says the word class and the abbreviation for each word.Ask: which word says what is happening?4: own answer.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- A quick trick for the adjective: ask ‘what does it say something about?’
- Use the names of the word classes outside the lesson too, for example: ‘which werkwoord do you hear in this sentence?’
