Welke leestekens horen erin?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Dicteeduel in huis.

Dictation duel: revising the categories

Year group 6Spelling · Block 1, week 3 · lesson 510 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: the school’s dictation duel

Today your child revised the categories they still find difficult, with a dictation duel: teams write words on a whiteboard and the captain says the rule. A bonus point only counts if the whole description is right: the category and the rule.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Listen: you hear each word only once. Say the word back.
AskWhich word did you hear? Say it again.
  2. Write the word on your board (or on paper). Keep it hidden until the signal, then hold it up.
AskDo you know which category it is?
  3. The captain says the rule out loud. The bonus point only counts if the category and the rule are both right.
AskWhat is the category and what is the rule?
  4. Last round: the whole sentence. Watch the dubbele punt (colon), the aanhalingstekens (quotation marks) and the capital letter.
AskWhere does a capital letter go? Which punctuation marks go in it?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Dictation duel at home. Read four words aloud, each only once: de ambitie · het accent · romantisch · de dunste. Your child writes them on a sheet and holds it up when all four are done.Ask for each word: what is the category and what is the rule?
  2. Last round: read the sentence aloud once; your child says it back and writes it down in one go: Mijn buurvrouw vraagt: ‘Wil jij even op mijn hond passen?’Ask: where do the colon, the quotation marks and the question mark go?
  3. Together choose one category your child still finds difficult and think of three words for it. Your child says the category and the rule for each word.Ask: how do you check the word?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • This is practice. Keep it relaxed.
  • Praise what is already going well and ask: which category would you like to practise more? Your child tells the teacher too.
