  3. Schrijf het woord op. Een samenstelling krijgt een sterretje ervoor.
    VraagIs het een samenstelling?

Ik schrijf i. · december: Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. · ’s zaterdags: Apostrof-s-woord. Eerst apostrof, dan s. · lama’s: Apostrof-s-meervoud. Bij meervoud en lange klank aan het eind: apostrof-s, behalve bij ee. · 2: heeft (hww) · gekookt (vdw) · lekkere (bnw), zegt iets over soep · 3: eigen woorden, met categorie en regel.

Revision: the categories that are still difficult

Year group 6Spelling · Block 1, week 2 · lesson 510 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can correctly write the categories I still find difficult."

How you coach: category and rule with every word

Today your child practised the categories that do not come automatically yet: kilo word, cent word, apostrophe-s, the uw list and au/ou, and the word classes from the lesson. With every word your child says the category and the rule, and knows what they would like to practise more.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Say the word back. Which category or categories belong to it?
    AskWhich category is this word?
  2. Say the rule too, as on the categoriekaart (category card) in the classroom.
    AskWhat is the rule?
  3. Write the word down. A samenstelling (compound word) gets a star in front of it.
    AskIs it a compound word?
  4. Check and say for every word: what is the category and what is the rule?
AskIs your word right? What is the rule?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read each word aloud once; your child says it back, thinks of the category and the rule and writes it down: de limoen · december · ’s zaterdags · de lama’s.Ask: which category is this? What is the rule?
  2. Read aloud: Mijn buurvrouw heeft een lekkere soep gekookt. Your child finds the hulpwerkwoord (hww, auxiliary verb), the voltooid deelwoord (vdw, past participle) and the bijvoeglijk naamwoord (bnw, adjective).Ask: what does the adjective say something about?
  3. Together choose one category your child still finds difficult. Your child thinks of or looks up five words for it, writes them down and says the category and the rule for each word.Ask: how do you check the word?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Praise what is already going well and ask: which category would you like to practise more? Your child tells the teacher too.
  • Ask about the five words from the third task again another time; that way they stick.
Answers for the parent: 1: limoen: Kilowoord. Ik schrijf i. · december: Centwoord. Ik schrijf c. · ’s zaterdags: Apostrof-s-woord. Eerst apostrof, dan s. · lama’s: Apostrof-s-meervoud.
