  3. Zoek het bijvoeglijk naamwoord (bnw). Zeg: โ€˜โ€ฆ zegt iets over โ€ฆโ€™
VraagWelk woord zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord? Over welk woord?
  4. Onderstreep de woorden en schrijf de afkorting eronder (hww, vdw, bnw). Controleer de hoofdletters en de leestekens.
VraagStaat er een hoofdletter aan het begin? Welk leesteken hoort aan het eind?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

Auxiliary verb, past participle and adjective

Year group 6Spelling ยท Block 1, week 2 ยท lesson 310 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can recognise the auxiliary verb, the past participle and the adjective in a sentence."

How you coach: finding word classes in a sentence

In a sentence your child looked for the hulpwerkwoord (hww, auxiliary verb, such as heeft or is), the voltooid deelwoord (vdw, past participle, such as gehad) and the bijvoeglijk naamwoord (bnw, adjective).

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Read the sentence. Find the verb that helps: the auxiliary verb (hww), such as heeft, hebben, is or zijn.
AskWhich word is the auxiliary verb?
  2. Find the past participle (vdw): the verb that belongs with the auxiliary verb, such as gehad.
AskWhich verb belongs with the auxiliary verb?
  3. Find the adjective (bnw). Say: โ€˜โ€ฆ zegt iets over โ€ฆโ€™ (โ€ฆ says something about โ€ฆ)
AskWhich word says something about a noun? About which word?
  4. Underline the words and write the abbreviation underneath (hww, vdw, bnw). Check the capital letters and the punctuation.
AskIs there a capital letter at the start? Which punctuation mark goes at the end?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Read aloud: Mijn oma heeft een warme sjaal gebreid. Your child finds the auxiliary verb, the past participle and the adjective.Ask: what does the adjective say something about?
  2. Read aloud: Wij hebben een grote taart gegeten. Find the auxiliary verb, the past participle and the adjective.Ask: which verb belongs with the auxiliary verb?
  3. Write this sentence with capital letters and a punctuation mark: ging je met de bus van arnhem naar bredaAsk: which words are names of a place? Is it a question?

How did it go?
