- Enkelvoud of meervoud?
Word classes, capital letters and punctuation
Learning goal: "I can recognise and correctly use the word classes, capital letters and punctuation marks from group 4."
How you coach: finding and underlining word classes
Today your child revised the word classes: the werkwoord (ww, verb), the lidwoord (lw, article: de, het, een) and the zelfstandig naamwoord (znw, noun). Your child also revised enkelvoud (singular) and meervoud (plural), and capital letters and punctuation in a sentence.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Read the sentence. Take one word and say which word class it is: verb (ww), article (lw) or noun (znw).AskWhich word class is this word?
- Underline the word and write the abbreviation underneath. Only these three word classes get an abbreviation.AskWhich abbreviation do you write under this word?
- Is the word singular or plural? Singular is one, plural is more than one.AskIs this word singular or plural? What is the singular?
- Capital letters and punctuation: a capital letter at the start of the sentence, for names and for place names; at the end a full stop or a question mark.AskWhere is a capital letter? Which punctuation mark goes at the end?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Read aloud: De katten rennen in het park. Your child says the word class of each word (ww, lw or znw) and underlines it. The word ‘in’ gets no word class.Ask: which word says what is happening?1: de (lw) · katten (znw) · rennen (ww) · het (lw) · park (znw) · in: no word class
- Singular or plural? Read aloud: de stoelen · het raam · de bloemen. Your child also gives the singular of the plural words.Ask: is it about one, or more than one?2: stoelen: plural, stoel · raam: singular · bloemen: plural, bloem
- Write this sentence with capital letters and a punctuation mark: gaan wij vandaag naar delft of naar goudaAsk: which words are names of a place? Is it a question or a statement?3: Gaan wij vandaag naar Delft of naar Gouda?
- From daily life: look together at one sentence in a book or on packaging. Find the verb and two nouns.Ask: which word says what is happening?4: own sentence.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Use the names of the word classes in daily life too, for example: ‘which werkwoord do you hear in this sentence?’
- Only verb, article and noun get an abbreviation this week; the other words in the sentence stay empty.
