Uw kind leerde vandaag de oppervlakte van een rechthoek uitrekenen zonder hokjes te tellen: lengte × breedte. Een rechthoek van 4 cm bij 3 cm is 4 × 3 = 12 cm². Het kleine tweetje betekent 'vierkante centimeter': het aantal hokjes van 1 cm bij 1 cm.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zoek de lengte (de lange kant) en de breedte (de korte kant).
    VraagWelke kant is de lengte en welke de breedte? Welke getallen horen erbij?
  2. Kijk welke maat erbij staat: cm of m.
    VraagStaat er cm of m bij de getallen?
  3. Reken uit: lengte × breedte = oppervlakte.
    VraagWelke keersom hoort erbij? Wat komt eruit?
  4. Zet de goede maat erachter: cm² of m² (vierkante centimeter of vierkante meter).

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Een rechthoek is 7 cm lang en 6 cm breed. Hoe groot is de oppervlakte?Vraag: wat is de lengte en wat is de breedte? Welke maat zet je erachter?
  2. Een rechthoek is 9 cm lang en 5 cm breed. Hoe groot is de oppervlakte?Vraag: kun je hem tekenen op ruitjespapier en één rijtje kleuren?
  3. Een rechthoek is 12 cm lang en 3 cm breed. Hoe groot is de oppervlakte?Vraag: kun je de keersom splitsen als hij lastig is?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een boekenlegger is 20 cm lang en 4 cm breed. Hoeveel cm² is dat?Vraag: wat is je som? Wat zet je erachter?

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Twee bekende fouten: de lengte en de breedte optellen in plaats van vermenigvuldigen, en 'cm' schrijven in plaats van 'cm²'. Laat uw kind bij elk antwoord hardop zeggen: 'vierkante centimeter'.
  • Laat uw kind de rechthoek op ruitjespapier tekenen (hokjes van 1 cm) en één rijtje kleuren: de lengte is het aantal hokjes in één rijtje, de breedte het aantal rijtjes.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' lengte × breedte, en bij 'controleer + eenheid' hoort cm².
Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 7 × 6 = 42 cm² · 2: 9 × 5 = 45 cm² · 3: 12 × 3 = 36 cm² · 4: 20 × 4 = 80 cm².

How you coach: the school's plan 'De oppervlakte van een rechthoek'

Today your child learned to work out the area (oppervlakte) of a rectangle without counting squares: length × width (lengte × breedte). A rectangle of 4 cm by 3 cm is 4 × 3 = 12 cm². The small two means 'square centimetre' (vierkante centimeter): the number of squares of 1 cm by 1 cm.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Find the length (the long side) and the width (the short side).
    AskWhich side is the length and which is the width? Which numbers go with them?
  2. Look which unit is given: cm or m.
    AskDoes it say cm or m next to the numbers?
  3. Work it out: length × width = area.
    AskWhich times sum goes with it? What is the answer?
  4. Put the right unit after it: cm² or m² (square centimetre or square metre).
    AskWhich unit do you put after it? What does the small two mean?

Tip from the teacher

  • Two well-known mistakes: adding the length and the width instead of multiplying, and writing 'cm' instead of 'cm²'. Let your child say out loud with every answer: 'vierkante centimeter'.
  • Let your child draw the rectangle on squared paper (squares of 1 cm) and colour one row: the length is the number of squares in one row, the width the number of rows.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is length × width, and 'check + unit' needs cm².
