Welke zijn even groot?
Making a solid shape from a net (bouwplaat)
Learning goal: "I can make a solid shape from a net."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Een figuur maken van een bouwplaat'
Today your child learned which shape goes with a net (bouwplaat, a flat pattern you fold). A pyramid with a square as its base has 1 square and 4 triangles: you fold the triangles up until their points meet. A cylinder has 2 circles and 1 rectangle.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Count the faces (vlakken) on the net. Which shapes do you see?AskWhich shapes do you see, and how many of each?
- Find the base (grondvlak): that is what the shape stands on.AskWhich face does the shape stand on? Where is it on the net?
- Fold or roll the other faces up, along the lines.AskWhat happens to the other faces when you fold or roll them up?
- Check: does every edge fit exactly? No gap and nothing double?AskDoes everything fit exactly? Is there a gap, or is something double?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- A net for a pyramid with a square as its base has 1 square and 5 triangles. How many triangles do you really need?Ask: how many sides does the square have? Where is each triangle attached?1: 4 (a square has 4 sides); the fifth is double
- Draw the net of a pyramid with a square as its base. Point to the base. What happens to the points when you fold it?Ask: what are the triangles attached to? Can you cut it out and fold it?2: 1 triangle on each side; the points meet at the top
- Draw the net of a cylinder: a rectangle with two circles. On which sides of the rectangle are the circles?Ask: which sides of the rectangle become round when you roll it up?3: opposite each other, on the sides that become round
- From daily life: a closed biscuit tin is a cuboid (balk), not a cube. How many faces does it have, and what shape? Which ones are the same size?Ask: can you point to the faces one by one and count them?4: 6 rectangles; the opposite ones are the same size.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The typical mistake: only looking at the shapes and not counting or looking at where they are attached. Step 4 catches it. Ask: 'What does it stand on?'
- Let your child really draw, cut out and fold the net. A can or a toilet roll helps: the label, rolled up, is the rectangle.
