Grote deelsommen schatten
Welk rond getal ligt dichtbij?1: 4800 : 8 = ongeveer 600
Estimating big division sums
Learning goal: "I can estimate the answer to big division sums."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Grote deelsommen schatten'
Today your child learned to estimate a big division sum with a round number (: means 'divided by'). For 1789 : 6 your child takes 1800, because 18 : 6 = 3, so 1800 : 6 = 300: about 300. If the rounded number does not fit in the times table (tafel), your child chooses a round number nearby that does fit.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Look at the divisor (deler): which times table do you need?AskWhich number do you divide by? Which times table goes with it?
- Round the big number (to hundreds). Does it not fit in the times table? Then choose the round number nearby that does fit in the table.AskWhich round number do you get? Does it fit in the times table? If not, which round number nearby does fit?
- Divide the round number: 32 : 4 = 8, so 3200 : 4 = 800.AskWhich times-table sum goes with the round number? How many zeros go after it?
- Check with times (800 ร 4 = 3200) and say ongeveer (about).AskWhat do you get if you do your answer times the divisor? Can you say: 'It is about ...'?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Estimate: 4810 : 8Ask: which times table do you need? Which round number is close by?1: 4800 : 8 = about 600
- Estimate: 5430 : 6Ask: which round number do you get? Does it fit in the table of 6?2: 5400 : 6 = about 900
- Estimate: 3380 : 7Ask: does the rounded number fit in the table of 7? Which numbers from the table are close by?3: 3500 : 7 = about 500 (3400 does not fit in the table of 7; 3500 = 35 hundred is the closest)
- From daily life: a baker bakes 2380 rolls in 4 days. About how many rolls a day?Ask: what is your sum? Which round number do you use?4: 2400 : 4 = about 600 rolls.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The typical mistake: the right digit, but the wrong number of zeros (4200 : 6 = 70 instead of 700). Always let your child check with times: 'seven hundred times six is forty-two hundred'. Then your child sees straight away whether the number of zeros is right.
- An estimate is usually a little off, and that is fine. Ask: 'Is your answer the right size?'
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times ยท what do I know, what is the question? ยท write down the sum ยท work it out ยท check + unit. Here 'work it out' is estimating with a round number, and at 'check' you do the times sum.
