- Laat uw kind vertellen.
Schat.
Estimating times sums with decimal numbers
Learning goal: "I can estimate the answer to times sums with decimal numbers."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Schattend vermenigvuldigen met kommagetallen'
Today your child learned to estimate a times sum with a decimal number, without working it out exactly (a Dutch comma is an English decimal point). An exercise book costs € 2,85 and you buy 4: € 2,85 becomes € 3, so it is about 4 × 3 = € 12. That way you quickly know in the shop whether your money is enough.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Put a little line after the whole number, so just before the comma (6,72 → 6 | 72).AskWhere do you put the line? How many whole euros (kilos, metres) is it?
- Look at the first digit after the comma: smaller than 5 → round down; 5 or bigger → round up.AskWhich digit is right after the comma? Down or up? So which whole number does it become?
- Work out the sum with the rounded number.AskWhich number do you use now? What is the times sum with it?
- Say ongeveer (about) and answer the question: is it enough?AskCan you say: 'It is about ...'? What is your answer to the question?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- 5 × € 3,95 is about ...Ask: where do you put the line? Which digit do you look at then?1: 5 × 4 = about € 20
- 8 bags of 4,2 kg weigh about ... kg together.Ask: which whole number takes the place of 4,2? How do you know?2: 8 × 4 = about 32 kg
- 4 × € 6,48 is about ...Ask: which digit do you look at, the first or the last after the comma?3: 4 × 6 = about € 24
- From daily life: you have € 20. You buy 3 loaves of bread at € 4,85. Do you have enough money? Estimate.Ask: what is your sum? About how much is it?4: 3 × 5 = about € 15, so yes, enough.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The typical mistake: looking at the last digit instead of the first digit after the comma (with 4,49 looking at the 9, so rounding up). Let your child put the line and move one square to the right: with 4,49 that is the 4, so round down.
- Working it out exactly is not needed: about is good enough. A child who immediately starts multiplying with the decimal number has not yet got the idea of estimating.
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is rounding and multiplying with the rounded number.
