Kommagetallen op de getallenlijn: niet elk stapje is 0,1

Uw kind leerde vandaag dat één stapje op de getallenlijn niet altijd 0,1 is. Zitten er tussen 6 en 7 maar 5 stukjes, dan is één stapje 0,2 en is de derde sprong na de 6 gelijk aan 6,6. Het leerde ook inzoomen: tussen 3,4 en 3,5 zitten weer 10 kleine stapjes van 0,01 (honderdsten).

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zoek de getallen die erbij staan: tussen welke twee ligt het getal?
    VraagWelke hele getallen staan er op de lijn? Tussen welke twee ligt het getal dat je zoekt?
  2. Tel de stukjes tussen twee getallen die erbij staan. Hoe groot is één stapje? 10 stukjes van het ene hele getal naar het volgende (bv. van 2 naar 3): één stapje is 0,1 (een tiende). Let op: niet elk stapje is 0,1. Zitten er maar 5 stukjes van het ene hele getal naar het volgende? Dan is één stapje 0,2.
    VraagHoeveel stukjes zitten er tussen die twee getallen? Hoe groot is dus één stapje?
  3. Begin bij het getal dat erbij staat en spring verder met stapjes: 2,1 – 2,2 – 2,3 …
    VraagOp welk getal begin je? Kun je de sprongen hardop tellen?
  4. Controleer: ligt je getal tussen de goede hele getallen? Ligt het dichter bij het ene of bij het andere?
    VraagLigt je antwoord tussen de goede hele getallen? Dichter bij welke?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Teken een getallenlijn van 8 tot 9 met 5 stukjes. Welk getal hoort bij de 3e sprong na de 8?Vraag: hoeveel stukjes zitten er tussen 8 en 9? Hoe groot is dan één stapje?
  2. Teken een getallenlijn van 6 tot 8 met 4 stukjes. Welk getal hoort bij de 3e sprong na de 6?Vraag: over hoeveel hele getallen zijn die 4 stukjes verdeeld? Hoe groot is dan één stapje?
  3. Teken het stukje van 7,3 tot 7,4 en verdeel het in 10 kleine stukjes. Welk getal hoort bij de 6e kleine sprong na de 7,3?Vraag: hoe groot is één kleine sprong? Op welk getal begin je?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een maatbeker loopt van 1 tot 3 liter met 10 stukjes. De melk staat bij de 7e sprong na de 1. Hoeveel liter melk is dat?Vraag: over hoeveel hele liters zijn die 10 stukjes verdeeld? Wat is dan één stapje?

Tip van de juf

  • Dé fout van vandaag: altijd stapjes van 0,1 nemen. Dan zegt uw kind 6,3 in plaats van 6,6. Laat het eerst opschrijven: 'één stapje = …'. Vraag: 'Hoeveel stukjes zitten er tussen deze twee getallen?'
  • Een hulpje: één hele is 10 tienden. Zitten er 5 stukjes van het ene hele getal naar het volgende, dan is dat 10 : 5 = 2 tienden per stukje. Laat uw kind de lijn tekenen en de sprongen aanwijzen.

Decimal numbers on the number line: not every step is 0,1

How you coach: the school's plan 'Kommagetallen op de getallenlijn'

Today your child learned that one step on the number line (getallenlijn) is not always 0,1 (a Dutch comma is an English decimal point). If there are only 5 pieces between 6 and 7, one step is 0,2 and the third jump after 6 is 6,6. Your child also learned to zoom in: between 3,4 and 3,5 there are again 10 small steps of 0,01 (hundredths).

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Find the numbers that are written on the line: between which two is the number?
    AskWhich whole numbers are on the line? Between which two is the number you are looking for?
  2. Count the pieces between two numbers that are written on it. How big is one step (stapje)? 10 pieces from one whole number to the next (e.g. from 2 to 3): one step is 0,1 (a tenth). Watch out: not every step is 0,1. Are there only 5 pieces from one whole number to the next? Then one step is 0,2.
    AskHow many pieces are there between those two numbers? So how big is one step?
  3. Start at the number that is written on it and jump on with steps: 2,1 – 2,2 – 2,3 …
    AskWhich number do you start at? Can you count the jumps out loud?
  4. Check: is your number between the right whole numbers? Is it closer to one or to the other?
    AskIs your answer between the right whole numbers? Closer to which one?

Practise together at the table

  1. Draw a number line from 8 to 9 with 5 pieces. Which number goes with the 3rd jump after 8?Ask: how many pieces are there between 8 and 9? So how big is one step?
  2. Draw a number line from 6 to 8 with 4 pieces. Which number goes with the 3rd jump after 6?Ask: over how many whole numbers are those 4 pieces spread? So how big is one step?
  3. Draw the piece from 7,3 to 7,4 and divide it into 10 small pieces. Which number goes with the 6th small jump after 7,3?Ask: how big is one small jump? Which number do you start at?
  4. From daily life: a measuring jug goes from 1 to 3 litres with 10 pieces. The milk is at the 7th jump after 1. How many litres of milk is that?Ask: over how many whole litres are those 10 pieces spread? So what is one step?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: always taking steps of 0,1. Then your child says 6,3 instead of 6,6. Let your child first write down: 'one step = …'. Ask: 'How many pieces are there between these two numbers?'
  • A handy trick: one whole is 10 tenths. If there are 5 pieces from one whole number to the next, that is 10 : 5 = 2 tenths per piece (: means 'divided by'). Let your child draw the line and point to the jumps.
