  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  3. Kleiner dan 5? Rond af naar beneden. 5 of groter?

  1. Rond af op hele euro's: € 8,74Vraag: waar zet je het streepje? Welk cijfer kijk je dan naar?
  2. € 4,28 + € 3,85 is ongeveer ...Vraag: rond eerst elk bedrag apart af. Wat wordt het dan?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: je hebt € 15. Je koopt een shirt van € 7,95 en sokken van € 3,40. Heb je genoeg geld? Schat.

Estimating with money

Year group 6Maths · Block 7, week 4 · lesson 110 min, no screens

Learning goal: "I can round amounts with a comma and use them to add and subtract by estimating."

How you coach: the school's plan 'Estimating with money'

Today your child learned to round amounts to whole euros (afronden, rounding) and use them to add and subtract roughly (a Dutch comma is an English decimal point). € 3,49 and € 7,65 become € 3 and € 8, so together about (ongeveer) € 11. That way you know quickly in the shop whether you have enough money: about is good enough.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put a small line after the whole euros (just before the comma).
AskWhere do you put the line? How many whole euros are there?
  2. Look at the first digit after the comma.
AskWhich digit is directly after the comma?
  3. Smaller than 5? Round down. 5 or bigger? Round up.
AskIs that digit smaller than 5, or 5 or bigger? So which amount does it become?
  4. Calculate with the rounded amounts: add or subtract. Say with it: it is ongeveer (about).
AskWhich rounded amounts do you have? Can you say: 'It is ongeveer ...'?

Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.

Practise together at the table

  1. Round to whole euros: € 8,74Ask: where do you put the line? Which digit do you look at then?
  2. € 4,28 + € 3,85 is about ...Ask: first round each amount separately. What does it become then?
  3. € 18,30 − € 9,60 is about ...Ask: what do the two rounded amounts become? Is it plus or minus?
  4. From daily life: you have € 15. You buy a T-shirt for € 7,95 and socks for € 3,40. Do you have enough money? Estimate.Ask: what is your sum? About how much do you have left?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: just leaving out the cents (€ 2,95 becomes € 2). That is not rounding: look at the first digit after the comma, here a 9, so € 3. Otherwise you estimate too low and think you have enough money.
  • Let your child round each amount separately and only then calculate. Calculating exactly first and then rounding is not wrong, but it is not estimating and it takes a lot of time.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is estimating with rounded amounts.
Answers for the parent: 1: € 9 · 2: € 4 + € 4 = about € 8 (exactly € 8,13) · 3: € 18 − € 10 = about € 8 (exactly € 8,70) · 4: € 8 + € 3 = about € 11, so yes, enough: you have about € 4 left (exactly it costs € 11,35 and you have € 3,65 left).
