Uw kind leerde vandaag uitrekenen hoeveel jaren en maanden er tussen twee data zitten. Het springt op een tijdlijn: eerst met hele jaren, dan met maanden. Van maart 2024 tot september 2026 is dat 2 jaar en 6 maanden, dus 24 + 6 = 30 maanden.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zet de eerste datum aan het begin van de tijdlijn en de tweede datum aan het eind.

  2. Spring eerst met hele jaren, zo ver als het kan.

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Van september 2023 tot januari 2026: hoeveel jaar en maanden? En hoeveel maanden is dat?Vraag: hoe ver kom je met hele jaren? Hoeveel sprongen blijven er over?
  2. Van november 2025 tot mei 2026: hoeveel maanden?Vraag: past er een heel jaar in? Teken de sprongen.
  3. 4 jaar en 2 maanden = ... maandenVraag: hoeveel maanden zitten er in één jaar?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een poes is geboren in augustus 2022. Hoeveel maanden oud is ze in februari 2025?Vraag: wat is je tijdlijn? Eerst hele jaren, dan maanden.

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Twee fouten: de maandnamen tellen in plaats van de sprongen (van maart tot mei zijn het 2 sprongen, niet 3) en een jaar als 10 maanden rekenen. Laat uw kind de sprongen met de vinger in de lucht maken.
  • Laat uw kind de sprongen op een tijdlijn tekenen. Wie op de vingers de maandnamen aftelt, komt vaak 1 te hoog uit.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het springen op de tijdlijn.
Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 2 jaar en 4 maanden = 28 maanden · 2: 6 maanden · 3: 50 maanden · 4: 30 maanden (2 jaar en 6 maanden).

How many months or years are there between two dates?

How you coach: the school's plan 'Time between two dates'

Today your child learned to work out how many years and months there are between two dates. Your child jumps on a time line (tijdlijn): first with whole years, then with months. From March 2024 to September 2026 that is 2 years and 6 months, so 24 + 6 = 30 months.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put the first date at the start of the time line and the second date at the end.
    AskDraw a time line. What do you put at the start and what at the end?
  2. Jump with whole years first, as far as you can.
    AskHow many whole years can you jump? Where do you end up?
  3. Then jump with months to the second date.
    AskHow many months do you still jump? Count the jumps.
  4. Add up the jumps. Does it have to be in months? Remember: 1 year = 12 months.
    AskHow much is it altogether? How many months is a whole year?

  1. From September 2023 to January 2026: how many years and months? And how many months is that?Ask: how far do you get with whole years? How many jumps are left?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • Two mistakes: counting the names of the months instead of the jumps (from March to May is 2 jumps, not 3) and counting a year as 10 months. Let your child make the jumps with a finger in the air.
  • Let your child draw the jumps on a time line. Counting off the month names on your fingers often gives 1 too many.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is jumping on the time line.
Answers for the parent: 1: 2 years and 4 months = 28 months · 2: 6 months · 3: 50 months · 4: 30 months (2 years and 6 months).
