Uw kind leerde vandaag aftrekken als er een 0 in de som staat. Bij 504 − 236 kan 4 − 6 niet, maar bij de tientallen staat een 0: daar valt niets te halen. Dan gaat het een stap verder naar links: eerst 1 honderdtal inwisselen voor 10 tientallen, dan 1 tiental voor 10 eenheden.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zet de getallen recht onder elkaar: E onder E, T onder T, H onder H.
    VraagStaan de eenheden onder de eenheden? Hoe zie je dat?
  2. Begin rechts, bij de eenheden: bovenste cijfer min onderste cijfer.
    VraagBij welke kolom begin je? Wat is bovenste min onderste?
  3. Kan het niet? Wissel in: haal 1 weg bij de buurman links, dan krijg je er 10 bij. Zet de nieuwe cijfers klein erboven.
    VraagKan het? Zo niet, bij welke buurman haal je 1 weg? Welke cijfers zet je klein erboven?
  4. Schrijf het antwoord onder de streep en ga naar links: T, H, D.

  5. Controleer met schatten: rond af op honderdtallen. Zit je antwoord in de buurt?

  1. Reken onder elkaar uit: 670 − 428Vraag: kan 0 − 8? Wat doe je dan?
  2. Reken onder elkaar uit: 902 − 374Vraag: bij welke kolom kan het niet? Staat er bij de buurman iets te halen?
  3. Reken onder elkaar uit: 700 − 263Vraag: twee nullen achter elkaar. Hoe ver ga je naar links?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een boer heeft 400 eieren. Er zijn er 156 verkocht. Hoeveel eieren heeft hij nog?Vraag: wat is je som? Waar moet je inwisselen?

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Dé fout van vandaag: 0 − 8 = 8. Dat mag niet: 8 − 0 = 8 klopt, maar 0 − 8 kan niet, dus je wisselt in. Staat er bij de buurman ook een 0, ga dan nog een stap naar links.
  • Let op de kleine cijfers: bij een 0 in het midden (zoals 504) hoort er een doorgestreepte 10 met een 9 erboven. Geld helpt: een briefje van 100 wissel je eerst voor 10 tientjes, en één tientje daarvan voor 10 euro.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het cijferend aftrekken.

Column subtraction with a 0

How you coach: the school's plan 'Cijferend aftrekken' (column subtraction)

Today your child learned to subtract when there is a 0 in the sum. In 504 − 236, 4 − 6 is not possible, but there is a 0 in the tens: there is nothing to take there. Then your child goes one step further to the left: first exchange (inwisselen) 1 hundred for 10 tens, then 1 ten for 10 ones.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put the numbers exactly under each other: E under E, T under T, H under H (ones, tens, hundreds).
    AskAre the ones under the ones? How can you tell?
  2. Start on the right, at the ones: top digit minus bottom digit.
    AskAt which column do you start? What is top minus bottom?
  3. Not possible? Exchange (inwisselen): take 1 from the neighbour on the left, then you get 10 extra. Write the new digits small above it.
    AskIs it possible? If not, from which neighbour do you take 1? Which digits do you write small above it?
  4. Write the answer under the line and go to the left: T, H, D (tens, hundreds, thousands).
    AskWhat do you write under the line? Which column do you go to now?
  5. Check by estimating: round to the nearest hundred. Is your answer close?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: 0 − 8 = 8. That is not allowed: 8 − 0 = 8 is right, but 0 − 8 is not possible, so you exchange. If there is also a 0 at the neighbour, go one more step to the left.
  • Watch the small digits: with a 0 in the middle (as in 504) there is a crossed-out 10 with a 9 above it. Money helps: you first exchange a 100-euro note for 10 ten-euro notes, and one of those for 10 euros.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is the column subtraction.
