Meter, decimeter, centimeter en millimeter omrekenen

Uw kind leerde vandaag lengtematen in elkaar omrekenen met het omrekenschema m – dm – cm – mm. Elke stap naar rechts is × 10, elke stap naar links is : 10. Zo is 1 m = 10 dm = 100 cm = 1000 mm. Een liniaal helpt: tussen twee getallen zitten 10 streepjes, dat is 1 cm = 10 mm.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zet de maten in het omrekenschema: m – dm – cm – mm.
    VraagKun je het schema opschrijven? Welke maat heb je, en welke maat zoek je?
  2. Kijk welke kant je op gaat: naar een kleinere maat (naar rechts) of een grotere maat (naar links)?
    VraagGa je naar rechts of naar links? Hoe weet je dat?
  3. Tel de stappen. Naar rechts: elke stap × 10. Naar links: elke stap : 10.
    VraagHoeveel stappen zijn het? Wat doe je bij elke stap?
  4. Controleer: een kleinere maat geeft een groter getal.
    VraagIs je antwoord groter of kleiner dan het getal waar je mee begon? Klopt dat bij deze maten?

Tip van de juf

  • Dé fout van vandaag: van m naar cm maar één keer × 10 doen (4 m = 40 cm). Dat zijn twee stappen: m → dm → cm. Laat uw kind de stappen met de vinger op het schema tellen.
  • Leg een liniaal en een meetlat neer: 1 dm loopt van 0 tot 10 op de liniaal. Bij 1 m 35 cm: reken eerst de meters om en tel dan de centimeters erbij.

How you coach: the school's plan 'Converting length units'

Today your child learned to convert length units with the conversion chart (omrekenschema) m – dm – cm – mm. Each step to the right is × 10, each step to the left is : 10 (: means 'divided by'). So 1 m = 10 dm = 100 cm = 1000 mm. A ruler helps: between two numbers there are 10 small marks, that is 1 cm = 10 mm.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put the units in the conversion chart: m – dm – cm – mm.
    AskCan you write down the chart? Which unit do you have, and which unit are you looking for?
  2. Look which way you go: to a smaller unit (to the right) or a bigger unit (to the left)?
    AskDo you go to the right or to the left? How do you know?
  3. Count the steps. To the right: each step × 10. To the left: each step : 10.
    AskHow many steps are there? What do you do at each step?
  4. Check: a smaller unit gives a bigger number.
    AskIs your answer bigger or smaller than the number you started with? Does that fit these units?

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: going from m to cm with only one × 10 (4 m = 40 cm). Those are two steps: m → dm → cm. Let your child count the steps with a finger on the chart.
  • Put a ruler and a metre stick on the table: 1 dm goes from 0 to 10 on the ruler. For 1 m 35 cm: first convert the metres and then add the centimetres.
