Bij โฌ 3,75: 3 euro en 75 cent.
- Laat uw kind vertellen.
Hoeveel cent of cm is elk?
What does a comma in a number mean?
Learning goal: "I can explain what a decimal number (kommagetal) means."
How you coach: the school's plan 'What does a kommagetal mean?'
Today your child learned what the comma means with money and length. In the Netherlands a comma is used where English uses a decimal point. Before the comma are the whole euros or metres, after the comma a part of one. For 2,45 m: 2 metres and 45 centimetres. For โฌ 3,75: 3 euros and 75 cents.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Look before the comma: those are the whole euros or whole metres.AskWhat is before the comma? How many whole euros or metres is that?
- Look after the comma: that is a part of a whole.AskWhat is after the comma? What kind of part is that?
- The first digit after the comma shows the tienden (tenths: 10 cents, 10 cm), the second the honderdsten (hundredths: 1 cent, 1 cm).AskWhich digit is in the tenths and which in the hundredths? How many cents or cm is each?
- Say it in wholes and parts: 2,45 m = 2 m and 45 cm.AskCan you say it in wholes and parts? How many euros and cents, or metres and cm?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
7,35 = ... euros and ... centsAsk: what is before the comma, and what is after it?1: 7 euros and 35 cents
- 6,7 m = ... m and ... cmAsk: in which place is the 7: in the tenths or in the hundredths? How many cm is that?2: 6 m and 70 cm
9,06 = ... euros and ... centsAsk: which digit is in the tenths? What does that mean?3: 9 euros and 6 cents
- From daily life: find three prices or lengths with a comma at home (receipt, tape measure, packet). For each one, say: how many wholes and how many cents or cm?Put real coins or a tape measure next to it: that shows what the parts are.4: your own answer, for example โฌ 2,80 = 2 euros and 80 cents.
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- Today's mistake: 2,5 m is not 2 m and 5 cm. The first digit after the comma is the tienden: 5 tenths = 5 dm = 50 cm. Tip: make it two digits, so 2,5 m = 2,50 m.
- The other way round: in 4,05 the 0 means 'no tenths', so only 5 cents. Saying '50 cents' means not looking at the place of the digit.
- Make it real: put down 2 euros, 3 ten-cent coins and 5 one-cent coins for โฌ 2,35, or hold a tape measure next to it.
