Cijferend optellen met grote getallen en in verhaaltjes

Uw kind leerde vandaag cijferend optellen met getallen tot 10 000, ook als je meer dan één keer onthoudt. Bij 2648 + 1573 onthoud je drie keer. Ook leerde het uit een verhaaltje de som te halen en het antwoord te controleren met schatten.

Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.

Zet de getallen recht onder elkaar: E onder E, T onder T, H onder H. Eén cijfer per hokje.
VraagWaar staat het laatste cijfer van elk getal? Staan die onder elkaar, ook bij een korter getal?
Begin rechts bij de eenheden. Tel de cijfers op en schrijf het antwoord onder de streep.
VraagWaar begin je? Welke twee cijfers tel je het eerst op?
Kom je op 10 of meer? Schrijf alleen het laatste cijfer op en zet de 1 klein boven de volgende kolom.

Ga naar links: tientallen, honderdtallen… Tel het kleine cijfer erboven mee.

Controleer: rond de getallen af en schat. Zit je antwoord in de buurt?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

3472 + 2859 = ...Vraag: hoe vaak moet je onthouden? Wat is je schatting?
5286 + 637 = ...Vraag: onder welke kolom komt de 6 van 637 te staan? Wat reken je bij de duizendtallen, nu daar geen cijfer onder staat?
Schat eerst op honderdtallen en reken dan cijferend uit: 4763 + 3159.Vraag: wat zijn de afgeronde getallen? Zit je antwoord in de buurt van je schatting?
Uit het dagelijks leven: een pretpark had in juli 2768 bezoekers en in augustus 3594. Hoeveel bezoekers zijn dat samen?Vraag: wat moet je doen: optellen of aftrekken? Wat is je schatting?

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

Een kort getal bij een lang getal: schuif het naar rechts. Staat er in een kolom geen cijfer onder, tel dan alleen het onthoudcijfer erbij: bij 3486 + 758 is dat bij de duizendtallen 3 + 1.
Zeg bij elke kolom hardop: '... plus de 1 erboven'. Het onthoudcijfer meetellen, ook als het vaker gebeurt, is het lastigste van vandaag.
Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het cijferend optellen met de vijf stappen hierboven.

Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 6331 · 2: 5923 · 3: schatting 8000, antwoord 7922 · 4: 2768 + 3594 = 6362 bezoekers.

How you coach: the school's plan 'Column addition', now with big numbers

Today your child did column addition with numbers up to 10 000, also when you carry more than once. In 2648 + 1573 you carry three times. Your child also learned to find the sum in a story and to check the answer by estimating.

Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
Praise the method, not just the answer.

Put the numbers exactly under each other: E under E, T under T, H under H (ones, tens, hundreds). One digit per box.
AskWhere is the last digit of each number? Are they under each other, also with a shorter number?
Start on the right with the ones. Add the digits and write the answer under the line.
AskWhere do you start? Which two digits do you add first?
Do you get 10 or more? Write down only the last digit and put the 1 small above the next column.
AskDo you get 10 or more? Which digit do you write down and where does the 1 go?
Move to the left: tens, hundreds… Add the small digit above too.
AskWhich column is next? Is there only one digit in this column? What do you add then?
Check: round the numbers and estimate. Is your answer close?

Practise together at the table

3472 + 2859 = ...Ask: how many times do you carry? What is your estimate?
5286 + 637 = ...Ask: under which column does the 6 of 637 go? What do you do at the thousands, now that there is no digit under it?
First estimate to the nearest hundred, then do column addition: 4763 + 3159.Ask: what are the rounded numbers? Is your answer close to your estimate?
From daily life: a theme park had 2768 visitors in July and 3594 in August. How many visitors is that altogether?Ask: what do you have to do: add or take away? What is your estimate?

How did it go?

Tip from the teacher

A short number with a long number: move it to the right. Is there no digit under it in a column? Then only add the onthoudcijfer (the carried digit): in 3486 + 758 that is 3 + 1 at the thousands.
Say aloud at each column: '... plus the 1 above'. Adding the onthoudcijfer, also when it happens more often, is the hardest part of today.
For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is column addition with the five steps above.
