Afronden op duizendtallen, en als er een 9 doorschuift

Uw kind leerde vandaag ook afronden op duizendtallen, en wat er gebeurt als er een 9 naar boven moet: 39 honderdtallen + 1 = 40 honderdtallen, dus 3970 wordt op honderdtallen 4000. Eén getal kun je ook op verschillende manieren afronden: 4962 is 4960 op tientallen en 5000 op duizendtallen.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zet een streepje na het cijfer waarop je wilt afronden.
    VraagWaarop ga je afronden: tientallen, honderdtallen of duizendtallen? Welk cijfer is dat, en waar komt het streepje?
  2. Bepaal wat het eerstvolgende cijfer is (direct na het streepje).
    VraagWelk cijfer staat direct na het streepje?
  3. Kleiner dan 5? Rond af naar beneden. 5 of groter dan 5? Rond af naar boven. Na het streepje komen nullen.
    VraagIs dat cijfer kleiner dan 5, of 5 of groter? Dus welke kant op? Welk getal wordt het?

Samen oefenen aan tafel

  1. Rond 5283 af op duizendtallen.Vraag: waar komt het streepje bij duizendtallen? Welk cijfer beslist?
  2. Rond 4980 af op honderdtallen.Vraag: welk cijfer staat na het streepje? Moet het naar boven? Hoeveel honderdtallen zijn het dan?
  3. Rond 6174 drie keer af: op tientallen, op honderdtallen en op duizendtallen.Laat uw kind bij elke keer opnieuw het streepje zetten. Komt er steeds hetzelfde uit?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: er wonen 3807 mensen in een dorp. In de krant staat 'ongeveer 4000 mensen'. Is dat afgerond op tientallen, honderdtallen of duizendtallen?Vraag: rond 3807 zelf af op elk van de drie en kijk welke 4000 oplevert.

Tip van de juf

  • De veelgemaakte fout is de 9 die niet doorschuift: bij 3970 schrijven kinderen 3100 of 31 000. Laat uw kind hardop tellen: 'na 3900 komt 4000'.
  • Alleen het cijfer direct na het streepje telt. 5499 op duizendtallen is 5000, ook al staan er achteraan 9's.
  • Vraag steeds eerst: 'Waarop rond ik af?' Hetzelfde getal geeft een ander antwoord als je op tientallen, honderdtallen of duizendtallen afrondt.
Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: 5|283, 2 is kleiner dan 5: naar beneden, dus 5000 · 2: 49|80, de 8 is groter dan 5, dus 49 honderdtallen + 1 = 50 honderdtallen = 5000 · 3: 6170, 6200, 6000 · 4: op duizendtallen (3|807, 8 is groter dan 5: naar boven, dus 4000).

Rounding to thousands, and when a 9 carries over

How you coach: the school's plan 'Round numbers in three steps'

Today your child also learned to round to thousands, and what happens when a 9 has to go up: 39 hundreds + 1 = 40 hundreds, so 3970 rounded to hundreds becomes 4000. You can also round one number in different ways: 4962 is 4960 to the nearest ten and 5000 to the nearest thousand.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put a streepje (a small line) after the digit you are rounding to.
    AskWhat are you rounding to: tens, hundreds or thousands? Which digit is that, and where does the line go?
  2. Find the eerstvolgende cijfer (the next digit), directly after the line.
    AskWhich digit comes directly after the line?
  3. Smaller than 5? Round down: naar beneden. 5 or bigger than 5? Round up: naar boven. After the line come zeros.
    AskIs that digit smaller than 5, or 5 or bigger? So which way? Which number do you get?

Practise together at the table

  1. Round 5283 to the nearest thousand.Ask: where does the line go for thousands? Which digit decides?
  2. Round 4980 to the nearest hundred.Ask: which digit comes after the line? Does it go up? How many hundreds is it then?
  3. Round 6174 three times: to tens, to hundreds and to thousands.Let your child put the line again each time. Is the answer the same every time?
  4. From daily life: 3807 people live in a village. The newspaper says 'about 4000 people'. Was that rounded to tens, hundreds or thousands?Ask: round 3807 yourself in all three ways and see which one gives 4000.

Tip from the teacher

  • The common mistake is the 9 that does not carry over: for 3970 children write 3100 or 31 000. Let your child count aloud: 'after 3900 comes 4000'.
  • Only the digit directly after the line counts. 5499 to the nearest thousand is 5000, even though there are 9s at the end.
  • Always ask first: 'What am I rounding to?' The same number gives a different answer when you round to tens, hundreds or thousands.
