Schatten hoeveel iets ongeveer kost
Schat.
Estimating roughly how much something costs
Learning goal: "I can round prices and so estimate roughly how much something costs."
How you coach: the school's plan 'Estimating roughly how much something costs'
Today your child learned to round prices to whole euros (hele euro's) and use them to estimate what something costs (a Dutch comma is an English decimal point). € 3,95 is about (ongeveer) € 4, because after the comma there is a 9: round up. That way your child knows in the shop, without a calculator, whether there is enough money.
- Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
- Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
- Praise the method, not just the answer.
- Round each price to hele euro's (whole euros): in your head, put a little line after the euros.AskWhere do you put the line? How many whole euros are there?
- Look at the digit after the comma: 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 → naar beneden (round down); 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 → naar boven (round up).AskWhich digit is directly after the comma? Down or up?
- Calculate with the rounded amounts: add them up (or do times).AskWhich rounded amounts do you have? What do you get?
- Say it with ongeveer (about): 'Het kost ongeveer € 20' (it costs about € 20).AskCan you say it with 'ongeveer'?
Words in bold are the Dutch words your child uses in class.
Practise together at the table
- Round to whole euros: € 8,46Ask: where do you put the line? Which digit do you look at then?1: € 8
- Estimate: € 6,35 + € 2,60Ask: first round each price separately. What do you add up after that?2: € 6 + € 3 = about € 9 (exactly € 8,95)
- Estimate: 4 × € 2,85Ask: which price do you calculate with? Is it plus or times?3: 4 × € 3 = about € 12 (exactly € 11,40)
- From daily life: you have € 10. You buy a ball for € 4,85 and a skipping rope for € 3,85. Do you have enough money? Estimate.Ask: what is your sum? Is the estimate more or less than € 10?4: € 5 + € 4 = about € 9, so yes, enough (exactly € 8,70).
How did it go?
Tip from the teacher
- The typical mistake: just leaving out the cents (€ 3,95 becomes € 3). That is not rounding: with a 9 after the comma you round up. Otherwise your child is almost a euro out. Exactly 50 cents also goes up: € 2,50 becomes € 3.
- Estimating is not working it out exactly: say 'ongeveer' (about) with it. If your child still works it out exactly, that is not wrong, but then ask: 'And roughly?'
- For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is estimating with rounded amounts.
