Uw kind leerde vandaag kolomsgewijs optellen als de deelantwoorden groter zijn dan 9, zelfs boven de 1000. 587 + 346 is 800 + 120 + 13 = 933. Daarna controleert het met afronden op honderdtallen: 600 + 300 = 900, dus 933 kan kloppen.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.

Hoe ging het?

Tip van de juf

  • Klopt het? De klas schat bij elke som: rond allebei de getallen af op honderdtallen (587 + 346 is ongeveer 600 + 300 = 900). Schrijft uw kind 9330 op, dan ziet het meteen dat dat niet bij 900 past.
  • Een deelantwoord mag groter zijn dan 9, en zelfs boven 1000 komen (600 + 500 = 1100). Dat is gewoon goed: uw kind hoeft niets te onthouden.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het kolomsgewijs optellen, en 'controleer' het schatten.
Antwoorden voor de ouder: 1: schatting 500 + 400 = 900; 700 + 120 + 15 = 835 · 2: schatting 400 + 300 = 700; 500 + 120 + 13 = 633 · 3: schatting 800 + 500 = 1300; 1100 + 130 + 13 = 1243 · 4: schatting 400 + 400 = 800; 700 + 110 + 13 = 823, dus 823 spelletjes.

How you coach: the school's plan 'Adding in columns', with estimating

Today your child learned to add in columns (kolomsgewijs) when the part answers are bigger than 9, even over 1000. 587 + 346 is 800 + 120 + 13 = 933. Then your child checks by rounding to hundreds: 600 + 300 = 900, so 933 can be right.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put the numbers straight under each other.

Tip from the teacher

  • Is it right? The class estimates with every sum: round both numbers to hundreds (587 + 346 is about 600 + 300 = 900). If your child writes down 9330, they see straight away that it does not fit 900.
  • A part answer may be bigger than 9, and even go over 1000 (600 + 500 = 1100). That is just fine: your child does not have to carry anything.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is adding in columns, and 'check' is estimating.
