Uw kind leerde vandaag sommen met nullen handig uitrekenen. 3000 + 5000 is 3 duizendtallen + 5 duizendtallen = 8 duizendtallen. Bij 4500 + 2300 telt het 45 + 23 = 68 honderdtallen, dus 6800. Aftrekken kan in twee stapjes: 6000 − 1400 is eerst 1000 eraf, dan 400.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Kijk: eindigen de getallen op 00 of 000? Zeg hoeveel honderdtallen of duizendtallen het zijn.

  2. Reken de kleine som uit met die honderdtallen of duizendtallen. 3400 + 2100: 34 + 21 = 55

  1. 5600 + 2700 = ...Vraag: eindigen de getallen op 00? Hoeveel honderdtallen zijn het?
  2. 5800 + 3700 = ...Vraag: wat is de kleine som? Hoeveel nullen zet je terug?
  3. 8000 − 2700 = ...Vraag: lukt het in één keer? Welke twee stapjes kun je nemen?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een bibliotheek heeft 6000 boeken. Er zijn 2300 boeken uitgeleend. Hoeveel boeken staan er nog in de kast?Vraag: wat is je som? Welke twee stapjes neem je?

Tip van de juf

  • Dé fout van vandaag: de nullen verkeerd terugzetten. 91 honderdtallen is 9100, niet 910. Laat uw kind het woord 'honderdtallen' erbij zeggen.
  • Deze sommen doet uw kind uit het hoofd, in kolommen uitschrijven is niet de bedoeling. Vraag: 'Welke stapjes nam je?'
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het rekenen met nullen.

How you coach: the school's plan 'Calculating with zeros'

Today your child learned to work out sums with zeros in a handy way. 3000 + 5000 is 3 thousands + 5 thousands = 8 thousands. With 4500 + 2300 your child adds 45 + 23 = 68 hundreds, so 6800. Subtracting can be done in two small steps: 6000 − 1400 is first 1000 off, then 400.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Look: do the numbers end in 00 or 000? Say how many honderdtallen (hundreds) or duizendtallen (thousands) they are.
    AskHow many zeros do the numbers end in? How many hundreds or thousands are they?
  2. Work out the kleine som (small sum) with those hundreds or thousands. 3400 + 2100: 34 + 21 = 55
    AskWhich small sum is left? What do you get?
  3. Put the zeros back. 55 hundreds = 5500
    AskWhat are they: hundreds or thousands? How many zeros do you put back?
  4. Can't you subtract in one go? Jump in twee stapjes (two small steps): first the whole thousand off, then the rest. 7000 − 1300: 7000 − 1000 = 6000, 6000 − 300 = 5700

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: putting the zeros back wrongly. 91 hundreds is 9100, not 910. Let your child say the word 'honderdtallen' (hundreds) with it.
  • Your child does these sums in their head; writing them out in columns is not the idea. Ask: 'Which small steps did you take?'
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is calculating with zeros.
