Uw kind leerde vandaag getallen met vier cijfers vergelijken: welk getal is het grootst? Het zet ze onder elkaar in het schema en kijkt van links naar rechts tot de cijfers verschillen. Bij 1581 en 1569 zijn de D en de H gelijk; bij de T zijn het 8 en 6, dus 1581 is groter.

  • Laat uw kind vertellen. U luistert en vraagt door.
  • Vraag, maar zeg het antwoord niet voor. Ook niet als u het weet.
  • Prijs de aanpak, niet alleen het antwoord.
  1. Zet de getallen in een positieschema (D H T E).
    VraagWelk cijfer staat bij welke plek? Staat er bij een kort getal een 0 bij de D?
  2. Begin links en vergelijk de cijfers tot je cijfers vindt die verschillen.
    VraagBij welke plek verschillen de getallen voor het eerst? Welke cijfers zijn dat?
  3. Welk van die cijfers heeft de hoogste waarde? Dat getal is het grootst.
    VraagWelk cijfer is het hoogst? Welk getal is dus het grootst?

  1. Welk getal is groter: 7254 of 7245?Vraag: zet ze onder elkaar in het schema. Bij welke plek verschillen ze voor het eerst?
  2. Welk getal is groter: 986 of 1034?Vraag: hoeveel duizendtallen heeft elk getal? Wat zet je bij de D?
  3. Zet van klein naar groot: 3406 · 3046 · 346 · 3460Vraag: zet ze alle vier in het schema. Welk getal is het kleinst, en hoe zie je dat?
  4. Uit het dagelijks leven: een speelgoedwinkel verkocht in mei 6125 spellen en in juni 6152 spellen. In welke maand verkocht ze meer?Vraag: wat is je vraag precies? Bij welke plek verschillen de getallen?

Tip van de juf

  • Dé fout van vandaag: naar de laatste cijfers kijken. Bij 1581 en 1569 zeggen sommige kinderen '1569 is groter, want 9 is meer dan 1'. Zodra uw kind links een verschil vindt, stopt het: de cijfers daarna tellen niet meer mee.
  • Getallen van verschillende lengte: zet een 0 in de D (0297 naast 4703), anders lijnt uw kind links uit en vergelijkt het de verkeerde plekken. Een getal met minder cijfers is kleiner.
  • Bij verhaaltjes gebruikt de klas altijd het 5-stappenplan: lees 2 keer · wat weet ik, wat is de vraag? · schrijf de som op · reken uit · controleer + eenheid. Hier is 'reken uit' het vergelijken met het schema.

How you coach: the school's plan 'Comparing and ordering numbers up to 10 000'

Today your child learned to compare four-digit numbers: which number is the biggest? Your child puts them under each other in the chart and looks from left to right until the digits are different. With 1581 and 1569 the D and the H are the same; at the T they are 8 and 6, so 1581 is bigger.

  • Let your child explain. You listen and ask more.
  • Ask, but do not give the answer. Not even if you know it.
  • Praise the method, not just the answer.
  1. Put the numbers in a positieschema (place-value chart, D H T E).

  2. Start on the left and compare the digits until you find digits that are different.

Tip from the teacher

  • The typical mistake: looking at the last digits. With 1581 and 1569 some children say '1569 is bigger, because 9 is more than 1'. As soon as your child finds a difference on the left, it stops: the digits after that do not count any more.
  • Numbers of different lengths: put a 0 under the D (0297 next to 4703), otherwise your child compares the wrong places. A number with fewer digits is smaller.
  • For story sums the class always uses the 5-step plan (5-stappenplan): read it 2 times · what do I know, what is the question? · write down the sum · work it out · check + unit. Here 'work it out' is comparing with the chart.
